Baylor University (Political Science)
My passion for education and interest in an extremely wide range of areas has led me to tutor all subjects (all levels of Math, Science, History, English, etc.), including honors and advanced placement courses, as well as SAT/ACT prep and some foreign languages. I tutor students of all ages with various ability levels, ranging from students with ADD and learning disabilities to those in the top five percent of their class. I am a National Merit Scholar and a 2002 graduate of Baylor University and have been tutoring full time for the past 14 years, although I also tutored part-time during college.
What sets me apart from many tutoring companies is my availability and range of subjects, ages, and ability levels. While tutoring services also tutor all subjects and ages, even in-home companies charge per hour for each subject and send separate tutors. I also charge by the hour, but there is no limit to the number of subjects covered during that time. For example, you may have a seventh grader struggling with grammar and a junior in high school who needs help in pre-calculus and chemistry. A tutoring company would set up three different times and send three different tutors, each of whom would have to take time to understand your children. The service would also require you to purchase a one hour session each of grammar, pre-calculus, and chemistry. I, however, could come to your home for an hour or two and work with both students on all three subjects. I am extremely flexible and can tutor in your home, at your school, or in a neutral location, such as a coffee shop or library. I am also available at short notice and hours that fit your schedule.
I truly examine each child as an individual. I do not have a standard tutoring or teaching method. I tailor my teaching to the needs, abilities, and learning style of each student. I challenge above average students to excel to the top of their class and encourage them to challenge themselves by taking honors and AP classes. I also have extensive experience working with students with A.D.D. and learning disabilities. These students, in particular, need to understand that they are capable of achieving anything once they understand how they learn and develop the tools to implement that method.
In addition to tutoring, I have also home-schooled several students and have experience with the K-12 and Texas Tech Distance Learning curricula. My tutoring/ teaching technique is not standardized; it is based on each individual student and his or her unique learning style so I look forward to helping you achieve your goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I attended a private Christian school from kindergarten through 12th grade and received my bachelor's degree from Baylor University, both of which required me to take many Bible Studies courses. As a tutor, I have taught students at the most prestigious religious schools in Houston, both Protestant and Catholic. I have years of experience tutoring Old Testament, New Testament, World Religions, Catholic Theology, and Catholic Social and Moral Teaching.
I have worked with homeschool families as the sole educator for all courses, as one of a group of private teachers, and as a tutor for specific subjects. I have homeschool experience with elementary, middle, and high school students. The two curricula I have used most extensively are K12 and Texas Tech University Distance Learning Program.
I have a bachelor's degree in political science from Baylor University. As a tutor, I have worked with high school and college students taking political science courses at various levels and in a wide range of concentrations, including American, comparative, and international politics. I also have experience in political theory and philosophy.
I have experience studying religions and tutoring a wide variety of religion courses. I attended a private Christian school from kindergarten through 12th grade and received my bachelor's degree from Baylor University, both of which required me to take many Judeo-Christian religion courses. I have also studied and tutored World Religions, Eastern Religions, and Comparative Religion and Philosophy. As an avid traveler, I have immersed myself in many cultures and find the study of philosophy and religion in these cultures fascinating.
