About Jessica

I am an ideal tutor for students of all ages who need extra attention in English and Social Studies, as well as elementary students who need help with Math and Science.

My experience and skills in hands-on teaching has inspired me to become a tutor for all age groups in a variety of different subjects. My work with the Houston Museum of Natural Science as a Teacher's Assistant for ages 5 - 12, as an AmeriCorps tutor in Louisiana for grades K - 12, and as a nanny for elementary students has given me a unique ability to evaluate the individual needs of a student and adapt my lessons to those needs. I've also had the opportunity to work with Best Buddies of Houston for children with disabilities and Noah's House for adults with disabilities.

I will soon graduate with my degree in English Literary Studies and a minor in Political Science. During my time in AmeriCorps, I was able to set up and manage a tutoring program that focused first in promoting interest in math and science, giving me additional skills in teaching students individually in these subjects. In addition, I have been trained in teaching math for the classroom and tutoring math subjects up to general 8th Grade. I am currently studying English Literary Studies as a full-time university student with the hopes of becoming a secondary English teacher.

My hourly rate averages at $40/hr, but I'm willing to adjust the price based on your unique situation. My cancellation notice requirement is 4 hours before the scheduled meeting, and payment is required if a session is cancelled to compensate for lost time with other potential clients.

I would love to meet with you for a free, one-hour consultation meeting. There, I can meet with the student, evaluate the type of learning style works best for them, discuss tutoring fees, and what time/ location works best for you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to consider me as your tutor! Again, feel free to contact me with any questions and I'll get back to you within 24 hours!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As a student in English Literature at the University of Houston, I excel in teaching students writing techniques and improving efficacy in literary analysis.

Political Science

Although my major is in English literature, my minor is in Political Science. I have taken over six college-level classes in advanced coursework for public policy, pre-law, foreign politics, and American politics.

I have complete advanced pedagogical coursework in Reading for elementary, middle, and high school students. I have a formalized approach to teaching students how to build stamina in their reading, as well as how to improve their understanding of the material.

Study Skills

After working in a community tutoring center with students of all ages and in all subject areas, I have refined my study skills coaching techniques to help students improve their ability to learn. I have also been able to take collegiate coursework in pedagogical methods for students of all levels.

I completed specialized coursework in Advanced Composition for academic, business, and creative writing.
