About Andrew

I am an English Teacher with a love of working with students. I bring a wealth of life experience to my teaching, which serves me well in the classroom. I believe in the potential of students and strive to bring out the best in them, to the best of my ability. I have a great rapport with young people. I am typically a favorite of students, attested to by other teachers, principals, and the students themselves.

I have passed the Texas content exams for teaching Social Studies and English, for grades 7-12. I am qualified to teach a range of subjects, including Writing, Reading Comprehension, Literature Interpretation, Geography, Government and Politics.

I have also completed a TESOL course, and most of my students are English Second Language so I have experience working with speakers in the process of learning English. I also have the experience of being a member of Toastmasters of America, the acknowledged leader in teaching people how to speak in public. This background has been of inestimable value to me as a teacher addressing students in the classroom.

If my profile seems adequate to you, I would relish the opportunity to work with your child to help them be a better student, and prosper in their academic pursuits.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I have years of reading and interpreting works of literature; I have read many noted books in
the "Literary Canon." I am experienced in helping students to comprehend classic texts of literature. I am experienced in writing academic papers; research, book reviews, and summaries.

Public Speaking

I was a member of Toastmasters International, for about two years. During this time I completed the required speeches to become a "Competent Communicator." I have also worked as a substitute teacher for two academic school years now, so I am addressing an audience of students on a regular basis. Therefore, I have lots of experience with public speaking.

Social Studies

As a part of the Alternative Certification program I am in, I passed the required State of Texas content exam for Social Studies; it is the subject that I am hoping to teach full-time.

World History

I have passed the TEXES Content Exam for Social Studies Grades 8-12. And I have passed the TESOLS Exam for English as a second language students. I also have years of experience in writing with focus and cohesion.
