About Lyn

My formal education includes CELTA (Cambridge University ESOL certificate ), a B.A. in Communications, and several ancient languages including Latin. My school years were spent in many places in the U.S. (my family was military), and in England and Canada.

Since retiring from a technical position, I have taught ESL in several settings: intensive English courses, mini-classes focusing on specific needs ( vocabulary, syntax, pronunciation, public speaking) and one-on-one classes where the student achieves exactly what is needed.

As a "polyglot", I empathize with anyone learning to use a new language. My style of teaching is experiential, so there is a focus on use rather than test results. Since I am interested in linguistics in general, I have found many ways to explain the structure of English.

If you like to learn by doing, and want to enjoy the process, please contact me for further information. And remember, a smile is understood around the world.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have 10 years personal experience in presenting speakers to medium to large size audiences. This required me to learn voice projection, body language and fielding Q & A sessions.

In addition, my 15 years of television production experience has often required coaching speakers who are "on camera." In today's world, that includes everything from a webinar to skype. There are special facial and vocal techniques when using video, as well as the need to employ supporting visuals such as power point.
