About Sarah

Hi! I am a school social worker during the day and tutor in the evenings and weekends. I love getting to tutor children and adults to help them reach their full potential.

I loved school growing up and excelled in academics, but not without dedicating time and hard work. During High School and College I worked with had tutors to build my own confidence in several subject areas. Because of my own tutoring experience I am able to understand the importance of a strong tutoring relationship and connection. In addition, as a social worker I am able to help ease students worries and anxieties and develop strategies that build confidence. I am also able to draw on my experience working in a school to help students interpret and meet school standards and expectations.

I enjoy working with children and adults, and have taught ESL to various ages both in the United States and abroad for 6 years. Getting to work one on one or in a small group and finding just the right teaching strategy to help a student excel is an exciting and rewarding challenge for me. I especially enjoy working with challenging students and getting to think outside of the box and find nontraditional ways to convey and retain information.

I currently work in a Newcomer school for grades 4-8. In addition to spending a significant amount of time working one on one with students, I develop school curriculum to help teach students social skills as well as assist and coach teachers and staff on how to interact, build relationships and connect with their students. I enjoy the intersection between teaching, mental health and relationship building.

I strongly believe every student has the potential to succeed. I would love to work with you and your students, I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a licensed master of social work (LMSW) and work in a school setting with adults and children that have special needs. I have worked with students with ADD/ADHD and am accustom to help create learning accommodations for unique learners. I am very patient and enjoy drawing on diverse approaches to effectively serve the students I tutor.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked extensively teaching and tutoring elementary students. I have volunteered as an after school tutor for students grades K-6 in math, science, social studies, reading, ELA and ESL/ESOL. Many of the older students and adult students I have taught are developmentally at an elementary level. I am accustomed to creating interactive, tactile and visual lessons.
I have taught primary school (grades K-5) in both Kenya and Tanzania.

Special Needs

I am a licensed master of social work (LMSW) and work in a school setting with adults and children that have special needs. I believe in using a supportive, trauma informed approach that encourages that builds confidence in the student while allowing flexibility to meet diverse needs. I have worked with students with major mental health needs and tutored students with schizophrenia, severe trauma, anxiety and depression.
