About Tara

I am HCC graduate with an Associate of Arts in Teaching and, currently continuing my education as a Texas Southern Tiger in the Education program. I have completed the following college level courses: Introduction to Teaching and Introduction to Special Populations (SPED) students. I have been actively tutoring for over a year and have receive an tremendous feedback. My students have advanced and progressed within their next report card cycle. In addition, Students I have prepared for the STARR testing have passed and received recommended performance. My students have gain an interest for subjects they were not very proficient at. I have increase confidence and most important I have increase student's grades. I prefer a student-centered learning environment. This is part of my upbeat personality and flexibility in teaching. I want the learner to always be interested in the subject and material that am using to teach. My approach is to find out interests of the students and use it as much as possible in the lessons. Then I would incorporate the learner’s ideas into the material that I will be teaching them. I have an extremely deep interest in creating new material to meet the interest of my learners. This is a result of understanding that every learner is different, but my goals are always the same.

I am passionate about teaching and seek improvement from all of my students. This is why I require that every learner has at least two sessions per week. I also have a 12 hour cancellation or rescheduling policy. My sessions will last approx. one and half to two and half hours. I cater to individual and groups up to four learners (additional fees apply)

Currently, I have 3 two-hour sessions available Monday and Wednesday with a special rate of $50 a session. Friday and Saturday rates are $30 an hour with a min. of an hour and a half.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have gained the skills necessary to tutor elementary K-6 learners by successfully completing the Education courses at HCC. Through my student-centered approach in teaching I am able to understand how the student learns and present material that will help the student improve. In addition, I have prior tutoring experience with a relative in 5th grade and assisting my daughter catch up academically in her PreK3 class. I have tutored Math, Writing, Phonics, and Reading at the elementary level.

Grammar

I have successfully completed Education courses and English college level courses to gain the skills necessary to tutor a learner in Grammar. In addition, I worked with students in developing the proper way to correct and find improper grammar. My method of teaching allows me to consistently find ways to keep the learner interested and help them improve academically.

Reading

I am a student at HCC who will be graduating in 2016 with an A.A. in Teaching. I have completed necessary Education courses to begin a career in Education. My teaching philosophy is dedicated to improving my learners knowledge and finding the best way to keep them interested in the subject. I have experience in tutoring reading skills to elementary students and helping them improve academically.

STAAR

I have experience in preparing for the STARR exam in 5th grade math, reading, and writing. I have worked proactively with a relative in tutoring her to successful pass the STARR exam and go into 6th grade. In addition, I have gain skills to successfully assist any learner through the education courses at Houston Community College.

Writing

I absolutely love writing and it's my favorite subject. I understand that the writing skills you possess that doesn't receive improvement will later hurt the learner. I have work with learner throughout my life in assisting with writing skills. The students I have experience working with range from Elementary to adults. I have the skills in editing and editing proofreading to help a learner grow in writing.
