About LaVita

Greetings!

I am LaVita "Ru" in the art world. I was given my first paint brush at the age of 8 years old and it has guided me through many imaginative journeys in my lifetime. I attained my Bachelor's of Arts degree at Columbia College of Chicago, graduating with an interdisciplinary fine arts degree in the year 2000. For the first part of my life I felt inclined to create commissioned portraits, large abstracts, wall murals, sewing projects and various crafts. Currently, I am the owner of an online business where I create wood burned, hand-painted jewelry collectibles and keepsake gifts.

As an art teacher I have gained my experience in in school settings as well as in one-on-one lessons, small group setting and community arts programs. I enjoy working with elders, young adults and children. My favorite aspect of sharing my knowledge with students is inspiring you to discover you own unique creativity, style and mediums you are most comfortable with. I will encourage you and help you to refine your talents as we take this journey together to you becoming the artist you admire.

Sewing. I am a self-taught seamstress. I began sewing as a child restyling old clothing, constructing simple pieces and making outfits for my dolls. Currently, I teach private lessons, do alterations, and custom designs. I am interested in teaching small group classes and private lessons.

Track & Field. Trak & Field is just a sport I have always loved. I was a very good track runner for 6 years of my life with excellent coaches. I am familiar with and can assist with various areas of this sport- becoming better, well-formed runner, having good health while training, and gaining greater endurance. My strongest areas were middle distance sprinting (400/800), hurdles (300) and high jumping. I have kept the knowledge from my past experiences with me and I know what it takes to be the best. In the past, I had dreams of going to the Olympics; however with children and more pressing life decisions I no longer saw this as the best direction for me. I look forward to using my knowledge for the rewarding purpose of training others and help them accomplish their short and long term goals in track/field.

I am very patient and have a great amount of experience to share. I have been formally taught from the age of 8 years old drawing, paint in different mediums and creating related crafts. Additionally, I understand the psychology of art, with a clear aesthetic ability for making art visually pleasing and/or conveying messages it is intended to convey.

I am eager to work with student who want to become the best they can be as a professional artist or simple want to have fun! Thank you for reviewing my profile and I look forward to creating wonderful new things with you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have been formally trained from the age of 8 years old in drawing and painting techniques using various mediums. My first teacher was Melvin King, a well-known Chicago Artist, followed by advanced placement classes in high school and then a concentration of art lessons at Columbia College in Chicago. Now I continue to use these skills in my professional endeavors.

Painting

I have been formally trained from the age of 8 years old in various painting techniques using water colors, oils and acrylics. I am experienced in styles ranging from abstract to realistic portraiture. My first teacher was Melvin King, a well-known Chicago Artist, followed by advance placement classes in high school and then a concentration of art lessons at Columbia College in Chicago. I currently, paint almost daily and love what I do.

Sewing

My mother was my first teacher when it comes to sewing- starting me off with simple projects. Beyond the basics I am self taught. I learned how to sew garments together initially, by taking them apart and studying the seams. I do not use patterns, but can sew pants, shirts, dresses and hats; with zippers, pockets, button, drawstrings, pleats and other intricate details. I am very patient and can work with individuals who have absolutely no experience.

Track & Field

I ran track for two years in middle school and 4 years in high school. I was part of a championship team an took part in winning section and city meets 1st/3rd place 4 years in a row while I attended high school in Chicago. I learned techniques for proper conditioning and toning, building endurance, refining running form and good health that can be valuable to an individual who wants to improve performance.
