I began my teaching career almost 20 years ago and I love teaching more each day! I have spent my entire career working with first and second graders. I also spent 6 years working as a literacy coach.
I taught a college level class to other primary teachers, modeled lessons, and observed and coached the teachers. I learned so much through those years. I have found, though, that my joy comes from working with students directly! I currently teach 2nd grade self contained. I teach all subjects and love it!
A few summers ago, I began private tutoring as a way to earn some extra money. What I gained was so much more than a little extra spending money. I learned how much fun it is to work one on one with a student and to watch them grow as a result of the extra attention they have received.
I have always loved teaching math which many of my colleagues found surprising because I was seen as a reading specialist. I enjoying breaking down a difficult concept for a student and then building it back. It is important to me that my students understand why they so something in math not just how to do it.
I have extensive experience working with emerging readers as well as fluent readers. I work hard to diagnosis exactly what part of the reading process is causing the learner difficulty. I have a strong understanding of how the phonics process relates to reading. I would love the opportunity to work with your child and help them develop the confidence and skills needed to be successful. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was trained as a Literacy Coach through Ohio Stare University as a part of the Literacy Collaborative project. I am a certified Phonics Lessons trainer (Fountas & Pinnell). I have taught developing readers for 20 years.
