About Shirley

I taught English 10 years on the secondary level in HISD (Woodson Middle School, Booker T. Washington HS, Sharpstown HS), 1 year with the Los Angeles Unified School District (Audubon Middle School), and several years as an adjunct professor with the Houston Community College. I was a counselor in HISD on the secondary level for 25 years. I was a substitute teacher in the Lamar Consolidated School District, volunteer in the LCISD and tutored students in SAT/ACT Prep, Writing, College Readiness, Searching and Applying for Scholarships. I mentored college bound students, until I helped to get my granddaughter into college (she is a freshman at Texas State University, San Marcos) and then I moved back to Houston.

I am a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and actively involved with a local unit in the city volunteering in the public schools and we give scholarships to graduating seniors who are college bound. I am also presently tutoring students. My personal goal is always to motivate students to want to be successful in whatever they attempt to do, to always do the very best they can in school, and in life.

I always loved studying the English language and reading and I want every student to experience this love of the English language and to read, read, read...because this is the key to success in life.

If you are serious about wanting to be successful in school and in life, contact me and I can help you with achieving your goals in high school and get you into college.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have approximately 25+ years serving in United Methodist churches as a teacher of Bible studies. Additionally, I have several years experience teaching Christian Education courses in a Bible College. I have a Master of Divinity degree from the Houston Graduate School of Theology and postgraduate work on the Doctor of Ministry degree.

Career Development

I have an M.Ed. and 25 years of experience as a counselor on the secondary level in public education. I have conducted several career development workshops and counseled thousands of students and individuals in the church and community in career development. I have also administered career development tests to provide resources for steering students into certain careers.

College Counseling

I have an M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance and have counseled senior high school students for most of my 25 years of counseling experience. Additionally, I have continued to counsel college bound students in the following areas: SAT/ACT Prep, searching for scholarships, applying to colleges of their choice, writing college entrance essays, completing the college application(s)... I love working with students in this phase of their lives. I also have compiled a book of Tips for the College Bound...

Handwriting

In addition to receiving A's as a student in school in handwriting, I have a B.A. in English and 10 years of teaching English in public education. I am presently tutoring 2 6th grade students and working with 1 especially developing her handwriting skills.

Speech

My undergraduate degree (B.A.) is in English. I took several speech and debate courses in college and was on the debate team. I taught speech classes while employed as an English teacher in HISD. I am a retired minister and have delivered hundreds of speeches in the church and community. I have also tutored students to develop their speaking skills.

Study Skills

I have 11 years' experience teaching English on the secondary and collegiate levels. Additionally, I have 25 years' experience as a counselor in junior high and senior high schools in HISD. I have counseled thousands of junior and senior high school students individually and conducted several workshops on developing good study skills in the public school setting and in the community. I am presently working with two 6th grade students with the goal of improving their skills and grades in reading, writing and math.
