About Dennelle

I'm a magna cum laude graduate with honors in English, and a member of Sigma Tau Delta - an international English honor society. I've taught English in public education at the 10th and 12th grade levels; and, I've tutored Algebra I and Geometry professionally.

I specialized in English, English Literature, Literary Theory, Linguistics, and Creative Writing to gain my degree, but I have also tutored math, history, and philosophy. I've had great success at helping students breakdown complicated ideas into manageable bits, and in helping them to create ideas and theses for papers. Immediate success is, of course, a goal; but, ultimately, working through an education is so much more: it is my aim to leave you enchanted with knowledge - through books, through mentoring, through your academic efforts and successes.

I welcome any relevant question, even one that queries the manner in which I might help you with specific academic needs. Finally, I'm usually flexible with time. If you think you might need a cram session early one morning before an exam, we can do that, too, with enough advance warning.

Finally, as with many teachers and tutors, I believe in the power of knowledge and its inherent right to belong to everyone (who wants it). That being said, here are some words of wisdom for students of English (paraphrased from "The Power and Limits of Literary Theory," by Richard Freadman and Seumas Miller, 1992):

To some extent, the meaning of a text is in need of completion by the reader. Thus,

1. The reader is both rational and imaginative.
2. The reader can make rational decisions, even under pressure.
3. The reader understands and can experience emotions, like sympathy and compassion.
4. The reader understands and uses the power of reflection.
5. The reader understands a sense of value, like ethics and morals.
6. The reader employs ethics and morals with sustainable significance.
7. The reader recognizes that he or she is a part of the world at large, and that his or her choices will reflect both internal and external influences.

Okay future leaders, let's "do this thing!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a B.A. in English, and was a prior teacher.

Proofreading

English degreed teacher.

Reading

Reading is a critical part of the study of English and Literature, and I could never have excelled as an English major if I didn't possess good reading skills - as well as the ability to constantly improve. My degree is in English (Creative Writing), and I've taught both high school and college English, which obviously incorporated teaching the skill of reading. In my career with Lone Star College, I also professionally wrote and edited our program's webpage for 3 years - meaning I had to be able to read and comprehend what I had written.

Spelling

Spelling is another major factor of earning a bachelor's in English. I've great intuitive skills when it comes to spelling, so that I recognize when a word "just doesn't look right." As a prior teacher, tutor, and writer/editor, I've become very skilled at spelling, but even more so in knowing that I must look up a word when in doubt - a skill critical thinkers employ. Never assume.

Vocabulary

Acquiring and having a broad and accurate vocabulary was a major part of earning my degree in English. The same skill was also required of my job as an English teacher. As an editor for my Lone Star Community College program's webpages, I had to display an acute sensitivity to employing the right word, as well. As an honors program graduate, I had to master vocabulary as it pertained both to the art of persuasive and creative writing.

Writing

I'm a prior English teacher and my degree is in English writing.
