About Karen

I am currently the Coordinator of Tutorial Services for Prairie View A&M University. I am a certified tutor trainer for Texas and I sit on the Executive Board of the National Tutoring Association. I have taught in the classroom (high school), in college (online facilitator & tutor for University of Phoenix; College of the Mainland Associate Professor), and have consulted with many agencies in working with inner-city districts helping to improve math scores for state mandated exams. I have worked with Pearson publishing company as a reviewer and grader for state exams; as a bias reviewer & content specialist. I have written online math textbooks and worked at several community colleges, teaching College Algebra. In my current position as Coordinator of Tutorial Services, I train and certify tutors in the best practices and strategies to help students be successful in mathematics. Because my undergraduate degree is in Electrical Engineering, I have a love for math and helping others "put the pieces together" so they can gain a better appreciation for the subject.

I have had extensive experience is helping students pass college entrance exams and nursing exams that required basic math skills. I have a gift in helping others understand and answer those questions that just don't seem to make sense. I have a proven record of helping students get 'unstuck' and getting them from point A to point B. I help you understand the language of these course, by giving you tools that you can apply to other subjects you might have difficulty in.

I have been singing professionally for over 20 years. I must admit that my gift is a natural one, as I have never received any formal, in-school training. I have truly been blessed with this craft, such that I have sang with some of the best in the industry. I am a worship leader at the church I attend and this is my passion. I can help prepare you for competitions, but mostly how to deliver and sell the songs you sing. As a teenager, I sang in the church choir and was often the featured soloist. I have been blessed with several professional experiences: recorded with Hanq Neal; recorded, with her pastor, the title track on the cd “Welcome to the Village”; recorded with Kathy Taylor and the Choraleers as well as with this group when it was renamed Kathy Taylor and Favor. I have traveled the country extensively and appeared, several times, on the renowned gospel program Bobby Jones Gospel. I also sang for the Queen of England during her visit to Houston, TX. and asked to perform for the promotion party of the Disney production, “Lion King” when the venue appeared at the Wortham Theatre.

I've served as supervisor for Katco Arts Academy theatre arts summer youth program funded by the Work Source been called upon to facilitate workshops on worship for conferences throughout the city and country. I've served as interim Minister of Music for Living Waters UMC and Minister of Music for Fellowship of the Fountains. I am currently a lead vocalist for the No Greater Love Concert, which is a yearly benefit concert held to aid underprivileged organizations in the greater Houston area. I am the Worship Leader for the Music & Arts Ministry at Covenant Glen UMC.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
