About Tiffany

I am a native Houstonian with a lifelong love of learning. My educational background is in government, law, and history, and my job is helping to preserve the history of the institution where I work.

When I am not preserving history, some of my hobbies are volunteering, dancing, reading, learning new languages, and playing, listening to, and appreciating music. I played classical piano until I was eighteen. My dearest hobby is volunteering as an adult ESL literacy tutor. The hobby that helps me express myself and be energetic is dancing and being a volunteer dance assistant in country-western two-step. I recently re-discovered my love of languages, so I am teaching myself Mandarin, Danish and Swedish.

I have been a volunteer tutor for almost three years. It is a joy to guide my learners as they work hard at improving their English. I learn so much from them, too. When I was in school, I was lucky to have many wonderful and inspiring teachers. What made them stand out often was the joy with which they transmitted the information they were teaching. I love being able to spread that same enthusiasm, and I believe that my students respond to that. Additionally, I am able to build confidence in my students by being patient, encouraging, and supportive, and by reminding them how amazing they are for taking on the lifelong pursuit of improving their English.

Music has been a big part of my life. As a performer, I loved expressing myself. My history background blends seamlessly into my love of music literature. Even though I do not play regularly anymore, I have retained basic theory and performance skills, as well as a broad knowledge of music history. I would be able to share my musical background most easily with younger students (kindergarten through high school).

Please contact me if anything in my profile resonates with your current learning needs or if I can provide more information.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I played classical piano for fifteen years and have retained a solid foundation of skills and concepts. I have a broad knowledge of music history, basic music theory, and piano performance. My knowledge of and appreciation for music would best be shared with younger learners (kindergarten through high school).

Music History

I played classical piano for fifteen years. During this time period, I took numerous standardized tests in music history and theory. I took a year of music literature in high school (Medieval through Contemporary), as well as a semester of music literature in college. My knowledge in this area would be geared towards younger students seeking an overview of music history, essentials of music theory, listening skills, and general music appreciation.

Phonics

I have been volunteering as an adult ESL literacy tutor for almost three years. My students and I work quite a bit on pronunciation and speaking, so I am familiar with basic phonics. I create short word lists based on the sounds we are practicing, and it helps my class hear and feel the differences in how the words sound (for example, ship-chip-shop-chop).

Piano

I played classical piano for fifteen years. I have retained a great deal of the performance skills and concepts I learned many years ago and would be happy to share them with younger learners (kindergarten through high school). My focus would be on music appreciation, listening skills, and basic music theory and performance.
