About Terrence

Hello!

I'm Terrence. I've taught for 7 years. I have worked with Pre-Kinder - 3rd grade students. In addition, I have tutored students at home for 4 years. I currently train teachers to help their students become stronger readers.

My approach is holistic. I use guided reading to increase students reading levels. I teach reading through phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. This approach allows students to master the various aspects of reading and become fluent readers.

I am skilled in elementary math as well. I have assisted students with various math skills from Kindergarten - 6th grade.

I invite parents to conduct an interview with me to ensure I'm a good fit for their son or daughter. In addition, my first session is free of charge.

If you'd like to reach out to learn more, please respond to this e.mail. I currently have a 7:30pm opening Monday - Thursday with weekend availability as well. If you are considering other options, I certainly understand and I wish you the best as you move forward.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I work as a Literacy Teacher Development Specialist for the Houston Independent School District. In this capacity, I serve literacy teachers and self-contained teachers from Kindergarten - 5th grade. As such, I have a working knowledge of what students are expected to know in each grade level and how to teach it to them.

Grammar

I've taught grammar for grades 2nd - 5th. I've done extension work deconstructing sentences, subject/verb agreement, and parts of speech. As such, I am qualified to tutor in this subject.

Phonics

I taught Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten. One of the basic skills in these grades is Phonics. I've done extension work with developing Phonemic Awareness, Letter/Sound recognition, beginning, medial, and ending sounds. I am well qualified to teach phonics skills to students.

STAAR

I taught 3rd grade Reading for three years and prepared my students for the STAAR exam. In my current role, I attend professional development trainings that teach me how to prepare both teachers and students for the STAAR Reading exam.

Study Skills

I taught third grade, a testing grade. I taught my students how to analyze texts that they read whether it is for a word problem in math or to answer complex comprehension questions in reading. I taught them useful skills to apply develop and sharpen their reading skills.

Vocabulary

I've taught grammar for grades 2nd - 5th. I've done extension work with building vocabulary. I use the Frayer Model, so students have an image, synonym, and sentence to help them retain the meaning of the word. I also teach students how to define words in a given context.

Best tutor

My son karon is ADHD so I didn't know what to expect from our first experience with a tutor. Needless to say Terrence was awesome, from the very start he made sure Karon was comfortable. My son do not like to read and put up such a fuss to do so. It's been two weeks so for with Terrence where Karon have been learning phonics, how to recognize long and short vowel sounds as well as sight words, def
