About Tegan

I'm currently a college student majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Mandarin Chinese.
Though I have no formal experience tutoring, I grew up among students who freely shared their gifts in a particular subject with those who were struggling. I feel proud whenever one of my peers thanks me for helping him achieve a goal. My focus is on the "understanding of a culture's mindset" through literature, language, and historical perspectives.

I found introductory Chinese easier to absorb than the intricacies of Romance languages. I retained straight A's in Chinese throughout high school and scored a 7 on the Chinese I.B. exam. Instead of learning a language by itself, I believe learning about the culture involved in the creation of that language is essential to gain fluency.

Learning words and characters through foreign music and television shows can not only improve a student's listening skills, but also put a cultural perspective on the words and phrases taught in the curriculum. Cultural idiosyncrasies can be seen not only through language and historical literature, but through food as well. A nation's development is shown through the agriculture, tools, and creativity needed to adapt a raw material into a definite food source. Learning basic food names and showing true appreciation for true Chinese cuisine earns you approval amongst the natives.

I believe a person who learned a language from scratch makes a better teacher for a beginning student. Because I suffered throughout the same subject matter, I know what difficulties you might run into while studying.

I passed my college's Intermediate Chinese I and II courses with ease during my freshman year.

I'm a beginner tutor, but I will devote all of my energy into educating students to the best of my ability. I welcome any suggestions students might have regarding my lesson plans.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I received the highest grade (7) in the International Baccalaureate Chinese exam. I retained straight A's in Chinese throughout high school, despite Spanish class being my second language for two of those years. In my last two years of high school I entered Chinese speech contests against University of Houston students and held my own against them. I participated in the Concordia Chinese Summer Camp in 2012 summer of my senior year and maintained top grades. Camp counselors deferred to me when they didn't know how to say something in Chinese. Exposure to Chinese music, short plays, and television shows will definitely be part of my curriculum.

Literature

I scored a 5 on higher level English in the International Baccalaureate; an exam consisting of two essays analyzing specific themes between Shakespeare's Hamlet, The Streetcar Named Desire, Who'e Afraid of Virginia Wolf?, and Hedda Gabler. With the score of 5, I gained immediate English credit in college, which put me ahead of my classmates.
Over my years in school I've studied many important works, such as The Catcher in the Rye, Of Mice and Men, A Clockwork Orange, The Bluest Eye, The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, The Road Not Taken, Dulce et Decorum Est, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Kokoro, and the Bible As in Literature. Numerous short stories and poems from Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and Ernest Hemingway were also part of my studies.
I've retained high straight A's in English throughout my 13 years of schooling, a 98 average in 10th grade the most noteworthy. Sometimes my friend and I were left to teach the class while the teacher went on important errands/meetings.
Some students might find literary terms, word choices, and formatting essays difficult, but I'm capable of helping them memorize certain formulas that will make their English experience much easier.
I have experience analyzing passages from writers such as Shakespeare, Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, and Wilfred Owen as well.
