About Mark

I have 15 years experience teaching and tutoring. I used to teach EFL/ESL/ESOL at institutes and public schools and colleges but now I work independently, mostly tutoring engineers and managers via Skype. A typical tutoring session has 1) Drills: take an example sentence with "To Be" and change it to negative and question forms in the present, past, and future. 2) An example sentence using an action verb and change it to negative and question forms in as many of the 12 tenses that the student knows - introducing another tense as the student masters each previous tense. Usually in 10 sessions, students learn and become comfortable in all the 12 English tenses. 3) Students listen to and answer dozens of yes/no type questions 4) Students listen to and answer Information type questions. Students do 95% of all the speaking in each session.

What I like best about tutoring is how quickly students get stronger in their English speaking and comprehension skills after a few sessions with me. All the repetitive drills become second nature and help them to spontaneously speak grammatically correct. Soon the students themselves lead the routine by presenting and performing the drills as well as compose the questions. This transformation is very fulfilling to me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I feel qualified to tutor botany based on many years of study and work in agricultural science. I earned over 20 credits in agricultural science courses at Tuskegee University (1984-1988). At Tuskegee University, I worked at the agricultural experiment station as well as the cooperative extension service. In addition, I worked for the Monsanto Company at the Creve Coueur research lab in St. Louis, Mo. testing the efficacy of microbiological pesticides (1987-88).

ESL/ESOL

My first business was a small company in New York City, where I would buy fish from the Bronx Terminal Market in 75 pound crates, divide into parcels and deliver it to neighbors for sale. In college, I managed a small managed a small model farm for a cooperative extension service research project project designed to demonstrate profitable farming practices for South central Alabama small farmers. I also ran a woman's shoe store for 2 years while in college selling overstocked shoes from a store in New York City. I run an independent online English language skills tutoring service providing classes for a silver-gold mine in Aysen Province Chile. My clients are the department managers, including the chief accountant Dr. Jose Medina Polo. I have learned from him and his predecessor about financial reports and data that measure the performance of a company.

Social Studies

When I lived in the Dominican Republic, I taught high school level US Social Studies. We read text sections out loud as a class. Then students answered the text questions in small groups. Later some of the groups would present their answers to the class. Differences in answers could be discussed. Stronger students were invited to make 10 minute presentations of the major themes of the periods dealt with.

Spanish

I grew up in New York City surrounded by Hispanic cultures [Puerto-Rican & Dominican] and formed childhood relationships among them. I learned Spanish in high school and found many opportunities to use it forming lasting personal and social bonds. I lived in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic for 6 years (1993- 1998) and in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico for three years (20011-2014).

World History

I taught world history at the junior high school and high school level. I currently teach English at Lone Star College.
