There is little I enjoy more than helping others learn; it is a passion of mine. I believe that to best help a student, the teacher must know the student on a more personal level than is usually possible given today's large class sizes. Doing so enables the student to directly communicate the obstacles they face and enables the teacher to address those obstacles.
I have five years of experience tutoring in elementary, middle and high school writing, reading, science, history and math. I used tutors during my middle and high school careers and can relate with your students possible frustration and/or reluctance to use a tutor. The experience has also taught me the importance of finding a tutor and a method of explanation that best fit your student's learning style and personality.
Additionally, I enjoy working with prospective college students preparing their applications. The application process is daunting and it can be difficult to find all the information needed. Through my experience, having someone more removed from the process than the student or guardians can help bring new perspectives, ease tensions and create a better environment for your student to really showcase themselves. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked at the University Writing Center at Texas A&M University for 2 years as a writing consultant. We offered writing and speaking tutoring services to the undergraduate and graduate student population. As a consultant I worked with many students on their applications to professional schools or their Masters thesis or Doctorate dissertation. Additionally, because our services were offered to the entire student body, we received a wide range of student types including international students, students with both high and low writing proficiency, adult learners as well as students from STEM fields.
This experience qualifies me to tutor students looking to prepare college and scholarship essays. As a former applicant I may also speak to my personal experiences with the application process and my observations of the process since my acceptance.
I successfully completed a college level course in basic genetics. I passed with a 'B' in both the lecture and the laboratory portion. As a forensic sciences student, genetics plays a large role in my studies.
With two years professional experience, as well as personal experience I am qualified to help your student with their public speaking skills. While at the University Writing Center, I worked with clients that needed to deliver speeches and PowerPoint presentations confidently and succinctly. We worked together to conquer issues with timing, delivery, content, as well as any visual aids to enhance their presentation. Additionally, I've held several officer positions while at Texas A&M that required me to give speeches to large audiences and pitch ideas to our advisers.
I am a senior at Texas A&M University. I have two years experience working at the University Writing Center (UWC) where I am certified by the College Reading and Learning Association as a Level 2 Tutor; this means that I have a minimum of 50 professional tutoring hours logged with the CRLA. At the UWC, our goal is to help make a better writer, not a better paper. We aim to not only improve our clients' writing skills but also their confidence in those skills. I have experience working with all types of written work including: resumes & cover letters, application essays, speeches and PowerPoint presentations, research papers, academic journal articles, Masters Theses, and Doctoral Dissertations.
