Hello future students of Chinese!

I'm excited to hear that you're interested in learning Mandarin! It's a journey that I began myself more than a decade ago and would love to help you get started with. I'm particularly ready to assist future travelers, business persons, or those simply interested in starting an exploration of the Middle Kingdom (China) and the Chinese language!

Here's what I can offer:

1. Help with overcoming the initial challenges faced by non-native speakers: 10 years ago, I was in your shoes, and I completely understand the challenges you face today. There aren't shortcuts to learning Mandarin, but there are strategies especially useful for moving forward. I'd like to share those with you while establishing a solid foundation in basic conversation, reading, and writing.

2. Patience and motivation for teaching: Whether you want to read, write, or speak, it will take time. The initial stages of learning Chinese are often invigorating yet frustrating. I will always take the time to ensure you have obtained a firm grasp of the material while keeping you from becoming bogged down with any one point.

3. A passion for cross-cultural understanding: Half the battle with mastering Chinese is appreciating the importance of culture to effectively communicating your ideas with the language. My knowledge in this area is based on both my MA graduate studies focused on Chinese communities in the United States and previous studies abroad.

I look forward to speaking with you soon!

Rob

My recommended program design: 10-20 lessons, 1 hour each, over the course of 5-10 weeks. A mixture of Chinese culture and Chinese language lessons, depending upon your needs, including two field trips!
