My name is Elbert O., a middle school Language Arts and Social Studies teacher with the Houston Independent School District for 20 plus years. I've spent all of these years helping a countless number of struggling students to pass the criterian referenced TAKS, STARR and norm referenced Stanford 10, required by most districts end-of-the year promotional standards. The experience and determination I had proved to be highly successful to children with extreme reading and writing deficiencies, as well as for those kids who aspired to attain "commendable" status.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My certifications (social studies composite and language arts) covers secondary education which includes 6th grade. However, I've spent a lot of my summers at Rhoads Elem. HISD teaching 4th and 5th graders specifically math and reading skills to help them pass the state and district promotional requirements. I also taught 3rd grade for a year at Zoe Learning academy in Houston TX. I was also responsible for teaching reading and writing to all grade (3rd. through 6th) in preparation for year end testing.
I am a TEA certified Language Arts teacher. I have taught middle school reading and writing for 20 plus years in the Houston ISD. I have also taught reading and writing in charter school environment. I have held morning, after-noon, and Saturday tutorials every year throughout my career.
I have taught Language Arts and Social Studies at the elementary and middle school level for over twenty years in the Houston ISD schools. All of my years of service were spent in schools with predominately minority, low-performing, at-risk, students whose promotional standards required they pass the state mandated TAKS and later on the new STARR.
My competency in this area was of paramount importance to my students who depended on my guidance and instruction daily to prepare them with the necessary skills and confidence to pass the Reading/Writing and sometimes Social Studies component of each of these test.
I can say proudly that every year of my tenure that we met and surpassed every local and state testing requirement imposed upon us. I was also the recipient of the MVP Award given to the teacher with the highest test scores in the school.
I taught Language Arts, Reading/ Writing in the Houston ISD for over twenty years to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. I did this under very trying conditions as I spent all of my years with at-risk students. I always received very good results. My last three teaching years I was the recipient of my schools MVP Award for the teacher with the highest test scores for TAKS as wll as Stanford 10 testing.
