About Karen

I have recently retired after teaching Elementary Special needs students for the past 30 years. I believe that all children can learn. As a successful teacher, I feel that it is my job to find what works with each individual child to help them achieve success in the classroom and on the state-mandated tests. I have done private tutoring during the last 5 years. I am happy to say that my students were able to be successful in the regular classroom with modifications and have since graduated from the need for tutoring. I am excited to begin a new career as a WyzAnt tutor.

I specialize in Elementary Reading, Language, and Math, although I am very familiar with Science and Social Studies curriculums. I am trained in Dyslexia, as well. I also have ESL certifications, My experience with Special needs students includes working with students with Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Emotional Disturbances, Intellectual deficiencies, Hearing Impairments, Visual Impairments, Speech issues, and ADD/ADHD. I have taught in the Co-Teach classroom, working with any student Special or General) that needed extra assistance in learning. My goal is to determine where each child is in the learning cycle, help with understanding current skills while helping each student to make up deficits in the core subjects. I have equal experiemce in the General Education classroom as well as the Special Education classroom.

I am flexible with my schedule at this time. Make-up sessions will be offered, if needed. I am willing to tutor your child at my house, your house, or at a public library. I have found that students are more at ease in a familiar setting than in a formal setting. I will bring all materials needed for each lesson. It would help me to have input from your child's teachers and school (notes, in-class assessments, FIE's, or other pertinent information) so that I can plan appropriate lessons for your child.

I look forward to meeting you and your child. All children are special. They deserve the best that we can give them to be productive students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have taught students with ADD/ADHD for 30 years. I have learned that you have to keep activities short and interesting for these students.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As a Special Education teacher, I have taught many students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I have worked with students on all ends of the spectrum. I have taught students with Aspergers in the gifted/talented program, students in the Life Skills program with severe autistic tendencies, and everywhere in between.

Dyslexia

I have been trained by Region IV to teach Dyslexia. This program incorporates phonics and handwriting to remediate needs created by Dyslexia. I have used this program in the classroom and with private tutoring for 10 years.

Amazing!

my daughter really loves tutoring and it's because of Karen. She's kind and fun and you can tell she really just enjoys children. My daughter doesn't even realize she's doing her dreaded homework.
