Nice to meet you! I have a B.S. in mathematics from UH-Clear Lake, and after six years at a government agency and the last three years as an actuary with a major accounting firm, I have recently decided to return to Texas in order to attend graduate school for a PhD in Physics. Nice to meet you! Things you need to know about me: I have a passion for learning about the world around me, and I absolutely love to help others gain a similar understanding and fan that spark which lives in all of us. I have a B.S. in mathematics from UH-Clear Lake, and after six years at a government agency and the last three years as an actuary with a major accounting firm, I have recently decided to return to Texas in order to attend graduate school for a PhD in Physics. I am located off of Saturn and Gemini near the Space Center.
I have privately tutored in many subjects, including but not limited to everything from basic fractions to differential equations, abstract algebra, and complex analysis in math, as well as basic undergraduate physics, chemistry, actuarial and computer science, and even music, as I play piano, violin, and am currently learning to sing. I have published in a math journal with undergraduate research, but I also take great pride in my ability to connect with students of all backgrounds and skill sets. I do not adhere to the notion that some people are "better" at math than others; in my experience, the largest stumbling block for students is almost invariably the sad and incorrect notion that math is somehow just "too hard" for them, that they simply are not suited for the subject. My biggest joy is seeing the light in a student's eyes when they realize that it is in fact not "too hard," and that they are more than capable, provided someone takes the time to actually learn where their specific gaps in understanding lie and help work with them to figure out the best way to fill them in. I believe the best teachers cater their teaching specifically to the student, which is why I prefer one-on-one teaching to any other form, giving or receiving.
I look forward to working with you! Best of luck in all endeavors.
Ellen has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering 3 questions submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.
Patient tutor with excellent communication skills.
My daughter is a freshman engineering student at Texas A &M and was struggling in Calculus and met with Ellen over spring break for tutoring in Calculus and Matlab, a programming language. My daughter who is very shy and reluctant to ask questions in class found Ellen to be patient and able to help her understand how to solve complex problems in both subjects. She had a Calculus test last week and she received an A on her test, a first for the year. Her confidence level has sky rocketed and I am so grateful that we found Ellen. I would highly recommend Ellen. She responded quite quickly to my inquiries , especially compared to other tutors I reached out to. Thank you Ellen!Leslie, 2 lessons with Ellen

Great SAT prep tutor.
Ellen has helped my daughter prepare for the SAT mentally and literally. Her experience and knowledge has given my daughter a peace and comfort as the test approaches. She seems to constantly analyze where the student is and give what’s needed, as well as assuring them what they don’t need to worry about. I can’t wait to see how my daughter will perform. Thanks, Ellen!!Linsy, 14 lessons with Ellen
My daughter was struggling in Geometry. She was almost at the end of the 4th Qtr and was failing. We found Ellen and she was fantastic. She explained Geometry to my daughter in a way she could understand. She made a 90 on her last quiz! Needless to say if we had found Ellen sooner I'm confident she would have an A for the semester. We just finished the year and waiting for the final grade. I'm confident my daughter will pass. We are looking forward to seeing Ellen again in the fall.Paula, 4 lessons with Ellen

Knowledgeable and very patient
Ellen was terrific in working with our son and trying different approaches so he could better understand or make sense of pre cal. She could see that he has been struggling and has asked to be in touch with his school's math teacher so that they might be able to work on a plan together to help our son feel more confidant in building a foundation for this course. She is very patient and open to thoughts and suggestions.Kathy, 33 lessons with Ellen
