About Ellen

Hello!

Nice to meet you! Things you need to know about me: I have a passion for learning about the world around me, and I absolutely love to help others gain a similar understanding and fan that spark which lives in all of us. I have a B.S. in mathematics from UH-Clear Lake, and after six years at a government agency and the last three years as an actuary with a major accounting firm, I have recently decided to return to Texas in order to attend graduate school for a PhD in Physics. I am located off of Saturn and Gemini near the Space Center.

I have privately tutored in many subjects, including but not limited to everything from basic fractions to differential equations, abstract algebra, and complex analysis in math, as well as basic undergraduate physics, chemistry, actuarial and computer science, and even music, as I play piano, violin, and am currently learning to sing. I have published in a math journal with undergraduate research, but I also take great pride in my ability to connect with students of all backgrounds and skill sets. I do not adhere to the notion that some people are "better" at math than others; in my experience, the largest stumbling block for students is almost invariably the sad and incorrect notion that math is somehow just "too hard" for them, that they simply are not suited for the subject. My biggest joy is seeing the light in a student's eyes when they realize that it is in fact not "too hard," and that they are more than capable, provided someone takes the time to actually learn where their specific gaps in understanding lie and help work with them to figure out the best way to fill them in. I believe the best teachers cater their teaching specifically to the student, which is why I prefer one-on-one teaching to any other form, giving or receiving.

I look forward to working with you! Best of luck in all endeavors.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have been programming computers since I was 11 years old; my mother majored in computer science and taught a class at my elementary school in basic programming in addition to giving me extensive one-on-one tutoring. I then went on to major in mathematics, focusing heavily on computer science, and utilized my skills at both NASA and KPMG. I taught myself MATLAB in three weeks for a project at NASA, have programmed extensively in Excel VBA as well as utilizing Pascal, C++, Oracle, SAS, etc., and can learn new languages with relative ease.

Actuarial Science

I spent 3 years as an actuary for KPMG before deciding that I would prefer to come back to the NASA community, serving both in the Life office and in Data Analytics/Predictive Modeling under Property and Casualty and making it through four exams. I have traveled extensively as an actuarial consultant, working with many large, household clients, and have considerable tutoring experience in the math fields required even outside of actuarial science, so it is relatively simple to combine the two. I am still in contact with many of my colleagues as well, so while I suspect the bulk of WyzAnt students will just be requesting assistance with the preliminary exams, any advanced questions I receive I can answer by pulling in additional expert help.

Algebra 2

Tutored for two years at San Jac. Math Lab, tutored privately for fifteen years since. Also spent six years at Nasa and three at KPMG where I used math extensively.

Computer Programming

I have been programming computers since I was 11 years old; my mother majored in comp sci and taught a class at my elementary school in basic programming in addition to giving me extensive one-on-one tutoring. I enjoy helping students learn how to interact with computers.

Computer Science

I have been a student of computer science since I was 11. As a teenager I read extensively about Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, ENIAC and UNIVAC, and first started studying programming on an Atari. I have also taken comp sci classes at the college level covering programming, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, the rise of the internet, etc. I can program in several languages and have enjoyed for some time studying the history as well as the mechanics of convincing computers to help humans.

Differential Equations

I majored in mathematics and have actually published original undergraduate research, utilizing skills learned in differential equations. I have taken multiple differential equations or differential-equation-related courses, both lower level and upper level undergraduate, and I have tutored the topic extensively, both at San Jacinto Junior College and privately.

General Computer

I have been programming computers since I was 11 years old; my mother majored in comp sci and taught a class at my elementary school in basic programming in addition to giving me extensive one-on-one tutoring. I enjoy helping students learn how to interact with computers.

Linear Algebra

I majored in mathematics and actually published original undergraduate research in abstract algebra. I have taken multiple linear algebra or linear-algebra related courses, both lower level and upper level undergraduate, and I have tutored the topic extensively, both at San Jacinto Junior College and privately.

Logic

I have enjoyed logic puzzles since I was eight years old; the highest grade I have ever received in a college class was 107 in logic, having not missed a single point all semester. On the debate team I won every debate I was on. I then went on to major in math, winning a scholarship from the National Science Foundation and publishing undergraduate research in the Journal of Algebra focused on the logical connections between upper triangular matrices and lattice-ordered algebras. I then went on to spend six years at NASA, singlehandedly designing software to consolidate and automate the tracking and manifesting of consumables for the crew of the International Space Station, winning multiple awards. Logic was obviously heavily involved in every one of these activities.

Piano

I started playing piano when I was five, and have given many public performances, both through school and at a hotel where I also worked for two years as a bartender/waitress. I am very rigorous and precise with my playing, much as with my mathematics, and understand how to cater both the theory and mathematics behind the music as well as the physical and temporal discipline required to master an instrument to my students. Most of all, though, as in all subjects, I do my best to make it fun, because at the end of the day creative pursuits are there to allow humans to express themselves and connect with the universe around them.
