About Alexander

I am a senior graduating this fall with a double major in physics and math from the University of Houston Clear Lake. I am an active participant in the UHCL Astronomy Club and president of the Physics Club. I speak fluent Norwegian and English.

I started tutoring seven years ago. My tutoring experience includes working for Numberworks 'n' Words in the United Arab Emirates and volunteering with Junior Achievement here in Texas. My job in the U.A.E. involved tutoring middle and high school students in math and English. Junior Achievement is a program aimed at improving financial literacy among children. In the last few years I have worked for Wyzant and the University of Houston Clear Lake Math Center.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As a physics and math major I routinely use the skills taught in algebra 1. I have years of experience tutoring middle and high school students in this topic.

Algebra 2

As a physics major I routinely use the skills taught in algebra 2. I have years of experience tutoring middle and high school students in this topic.

Calculus

Calculus is a basic skill required for a real understanding of most of the hard sciences, especially physics. I use the material taught in calculus courses on a daily basis.

Chemistry

I received A grades in my general chemistry courses and remember the material very well. I have some experience tutoring in these subjects. Certain physics courses I have taken have given me a deeper understanding of several topics covered by general chemistry courses, such as basic thermodynamics and entropy. I have also taken organic chemistry.

Chess

I have a 1450+ rating on the Chess Time app, which puts me somewhere in the top 1% of the roughly 1.3 million users. I play often with other math and physics majors at UHCL. I am not an extraordinary player, but I only personally know a couple players who can beat me more often than I beat them.

Differential Equations

I routinely use differential equations for my core physics classes. I have taken a course on ordinary differential equations as a math elective. Both ordinary and partial differential equations were covered in physics-oriented math courses required for my physics degree. I am also very familiar with integral transforms and other related subjects.

Finite Math

The subjects covered in a finite math course are prerequisite knowledge for a wide range of courses I have taken as a math and physics major. I have tutored this subject before and I am familiar with the topics generally covered in finite math courses.

Homeschool

I have worked with several homeschool students in the last few years. Specifically I have a lot of experience working with parents and students to asses what their goals are for math and science and bringing the student up to that level. Some of my students have needed help passing standardized tests in math whereas others have needed help filling in gaps to start college.

Linear Algebra

I received an A in a linear algebra course at Houston Community College. I am happy to provide a transcript. I found the content of the course relatively easy to understand. I think I could be helpful to other students who are struggling with a linear algebra course.

MATLAB

I received an A in Math Software, a MATLAB based course. I received a broad introduction to working with MATLAB for a variety of purposes. Much of the course was focused on solutions to or analysis of differential equations and chaotic motion. I have also used MATLAB for a mechanics course for my physics degree.

Precalculus

I routinely use the content of precalculus courses in my upper-level math and physics courses. Many of the students I tutor either have questions about this class or require occasional reminders on how to apply this content to their other math and science courses.
