About Abigail

As a University of Houston senior, I have advanced through a myriad of Basic-level courses, learned valuable study skills, and have applied those study skills and knowledge in my own habits and in those of the students whom I have tutored. As an older sister of elementary age and high school age siblings, I have learned patience and versatility with young people struggling to grasp material or "make it stick" in their minds. Currently, I work daily with international students interested in ESL for the purposes of passing the TOEFL or IELTS, or of furthering their English proficiency for the workforce. With a background in Psychology, I have had extensive exposure to the social sciences, as well as the related natural sciences. While in high school, I earned a 30 on the ACT and a 2020 on the SAT, enough to secure a full scholarship to the third largest public University in Texas - the University of Houston. This was accomplished through studying weekly with the help of my own tutor. I have tutored a middle-school age student in elementary math, spelling, and literature throughout the last year, and learned a great deal about the art of balancing motivation and correction of young students. I have found that with younger students, a "hand's on" approach is beneficial for the purposes of modeling. However; with older students, i.e. the ESL students with whom I've worked, the approach must be adapted to the student's optimal manner of learning, e.g. visual, auditory, etc. All levels of subject matter require practice and repetition over time to build a stable long-term memory that outlasts the impending exam for which most students just "cram and dump" the information. Please let me know via email if you have any questions about my experience or tutoring availability. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I have studied and taken the ACT, and performed well enough to obtain a full scholarship from a major public University. My score on the ACT was a 30 overall, with a 28 in the Science portion. My scores were direct consequences of the study skills I implemented in my own study routine.

Algebra 1

I have taken Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Precalculus, University Calculus 1,2, and 3, University Finite Math, and Psychological Statistics. I have passed each of these with a B (84-89/100) or higher, although most have been with an A. I have tutored in multiple levels of mathematics, and have scored statistically high on the Math portions of the ASVAB, ACT, and SAT standardized tests.

Elementary Math

I have taken Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Precalculus, University Business Calculus, University Finite Math, and Psychological Statistics. I have passed each of these with a B (84-89/100) or higher, although most have been with an A. I have tutored in multiple levels of mathematics, and have scored statistically high on the Math portions of the ASVAB, ACT, and SAT standardized tests.

My experience includes just under 2 years of tutoring elementary math, from 1-5 grade. This has included learning, reviewing, and practicing a variety of material - from linear algebra to arithmetic, from finding the circumference of a circle with pi to pie charts.

Elementary Science

I have taken and passed University Biology, Chemistry (secondary and University levels), Secondary Physics, Physiological Biology, and Cognitive Biology, all with a B (84-89/100) or higher. I have also taken the ACT and scored a 28 in the Science portion.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked for an accredited intensive English program for the last year. I have tutored non-native English speakers in a variety of subjects, including English. I also am a program assistant for an enrichment program targeted towards the development of conversational skills of international students. I am passionate about working with international students, and feel that I am more than qualified to tutor in this subject.

As far as my own academic proficiency, I have taken all introductory level University English courses, and have passed them with all "A"s. I have also taken over 20 hours of writing intensive courses at the University of Houston, achieving high scores in each of these courses, as well.

Sociology

As a Liberal Arts and Social Sciences major (pursuing a degree in Psychology), I have taken multiple University Sociology courses. These include both an introductory course to Sociology, and an advanced Social Psychology course - both in which I made a B+ or higher. I have tutored other University students in Sociology, assisting them in passing midterms and finals, as well as completing research papers and essays.
