About James

“Passionate…flexible in thought…creative…adventurous…independent…motivated…tenacious...” are just some of the ways people have described me, personally and professionally. I have worked in a variety of academic arenas, including substitute teaching (elementary, middle and high school); undergraduate colleges; graduate schools; and independent organizations. While serving as a clinical psychologist (1994 - 2012), my work involved helping youth/people clarify their goals and how best to address them through various forms of therapy (e.g., talking, medication, group process, assessments, skill building, etc.). My career in psychology progressed into motivating resistant youth. These experiences helped me acquire specific skills working with challenging individuals and finding creative ways to encourage their motivation and achievement. They contributed to my current interests in ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution). Communication (oral and written), negotiation, problem identification, organization, tenacity, flexibility of thought and planning are strong attributes in my professional identity. My skills, experience, knowledge and good fortune helped me and others achieve many goals thought insurmountable. I am hoping we can talk further about how I might be a useful, productive agent toward the obtainment of your academic/skill building goals. “Passionate…flexible in thought…creative…adventurous…independent…motivated…tenacious...” are just some of the ways people have described me, personally and professionally. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with many youth having a diagnosis of ADHD. That work has involved coaching them in organizational habits (over 10 years), methods for managing distraction and behavior control, and exploring various mediums for learning material. I also have experience in ADHD assessment and a knowledgeable understanding of the implications this can have on learning. Further, I consulted to various private schools (Sage School - intellectually gifted students) and acquired many skills working with bright youth, having ADHD and the academic, emotional and social implications of this challenge.

Aspergers

As a clinical psychologist for 24 years, I worked with youth having Aspergers and have conducted testing with this population (Theories of Mind Tasks). I have helped them learn and work on social skill progression, use of language in social discourse, and have helped them learn more about their style of interacting with friends, educators, family members and other community figures by using texts and other forms of self-education. I have also been helpful teaching other members of the family and social community more effective ways for teaching and interacting with this population, and these interventions have proved effective.

Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding is an individual sport that involves specific skills: Knowledge of muscles and their development, clearly identified goals, proper nutrition and a variety of personality attributes that help a person to sustain the long-term progression with bodybuilding. Having been involved in bodybuilding for almost 30 years, teaching/helping other people develop a system for achieving their physical goals, knowing the various parts involved in motivation, and having constructed various programs for youth interested in this area, I am well qualified to tutor people in bodybuilding.

Career Development

I have administered career interest inventories, work as a consultant to people seeking career options (young and senior), mentored people looking to work in psychology or other areas of mental health, and developed specific plans with people to help them explore their occupational interests further. I have done this off and on for over 20 years. I have also developed training programs for people looking to work in the area of mental health and when not a viable option, facilitated their movement in other directions.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with many elementary school age youth nearly 30 years, serving as a counselor, substitute teacher, consultant, learning coach and evaluator. I have a wonderful ability to connect with them and have often had great success motivating them to complete difficult tasks. While it is crucial for youth in that general age range to acquire specific skills, it is equally important to support an excitement, joy and curiosity for learning. I am often very good at keeping the work fun and interesting. The specific academic areas that I have coached students in include spelling, basic math concepts, general areas of science, report writing, and construction of timelines for history projects.

Fitness

I have been a summer camp Director for youth (Ft. Lauderdale, 1986) that involved helping the program construct fitness activities for children between the ages 6 - 12. In addition, I have substituted for public schools in Physical Education, and have also worked with youth to develop fitness programs to help them either lose weight (adolescent girls), build muscle or strength (both genders), and learn about the role of nutrition also attached to fitness.

Pharmacology

I completed a graduate level course (1990's) in Psychopharmacology, worked in the field of psychology and became very familiar with many chemical properties and use of various medications in this area. I have also attended several conferences during the tenure as a psychologist, discussing the use of various medications and trends in clinical practice.

Public Speaking

I have had the pleasure of leading professional conferences that involve speaking with roughly 50 individuals, teaching courses with over 30 students, and lead and/or contributed to conferences in academic programs. Further, I was a "speech judge" several times in my early years of college and took courses in Speech and Public Speaking. During those classes, public speaking was a requirement.

Study Skills

Having worked as a clinical psychologist for children and adolescents, while also completing academic and learning evaluations with many, I have acquired the knowledge and skills requirements underlying the process of learning. I have the ability to assess those skills used/lacking in learning/study and know well various methods for intervention. Further, I have worked with over 20 youth in this exact area to help them acquire the skills required for in-class information gathering, and then teaching them how to cluster information into meaningful study task.

Swimming

I was a lifeguard for 4 summers, taught swimming lessons at the public swimming pool and privately throughout those years. I was the Head Guard the last 2 summer, completed my merit badge in swimming, and continue swimming as frequently as one form of exercise. I completed both Lifeguard Course and WSI (Water Safety Instructor) certifications (although they have since expired).

Writing

During my tenure as adjunct faculty to MSPP and Wheelock College, I assigned and graded numerous papers on social science subjects, and actively wrote many psychological reports and professional papers. I feel well qualified to help in the area of writing, as well as those having trouble planning and organizing themselves for the longer term writing assignments.
