My goal is to help students lay a solid educational foundation through mastery of writing, reading, speaking, and listening comprehension of the English and or Spanish language(s) while improving confidence and classroom participation. I strive to equip students with the necessary study and linguistic skills that will enable them to excel towards their full potential for the academic school year and beyond.
I am a native Houstonian who fell in love with Spanish in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have studied Spanish as a second language for more than 10 years. Every student's goals and abilities are different. I tutor students in all levels of Spanish: patiently re-explaining classroom concepts, starting from scratch with no previous experience with Spanish, practicing rusty conversation skills, Spanish for the workplace, preparing for the IB exam, and in some cases making sure students know enough to pass their tests and finals.
I began tutoring as an undergraduate and helped over 20 students protect their GPA from the dreaded language requirement. Thanks to weekly sessions, they were able to pass Spanish courses they had previously failed. I was also awarded Best All Around Female Tutor on my campus based on staff and student input. I provide alternate explanations and clarification of classroom instruction, reinforcing audio, written, and oral communication skills, and create study guides and practice exams to ensure student comprehension of difficult material. I assign short post tutoring session exercises that are designed to test students ability to reproduce language independently to ensure they understand the topics covered.
After receiving my bachelor's in Hispanic Studies from The University of Tennessee, I briefly taught high school Spanish at a charter school. I turned to private tutoring and have found working one on one with students to be a fun and effective learning environment. Whether you are struggling with a college, high school, or middle school course, seeking to learn Spanish for fun, or need to get a basic grip on grammar and job specific vocabulary, I will be there help you along the way.
I also have a knack for turning good papers and essays into polished pieces of work. Many people know exactly what they want to say, but don't quite have the way with words to accurately and eloquently convey their thoughts, which is where I come in. I have helped students with admissions essays for undergraduate studies, medical school, and graduate school, as well as essays for everyday classes. Sharing in the excitement and joy of acceptance letters and a students (first) ‘A’ paper is one of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring.
I also tutor students virtually using Google Hangouts, Facetime, and Skype. We've found this creates a record of what was studied for future use, a dynamic learning experience and cuts out unnecessary commuting/traffic headaches. Please let me know what days and times are best for your schedule so that we can set up our first session. Thank you for using WyzAnt and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Shannon has been a very positive, patient, and encouraging Spanish tutor. She is helping me to become fluent in Spanish by challenging me to listen to and speak fluent Spanish. She also assigns fun homework like going to the grocery store and using the Self-checkout station in Spanish, going to a Mexican restaurant and ordering only in Spanish, and watching a movie in the Spanish setting. She is very good at what she does.
Ms. K. has tutored our daughter for the past year in Spanish. We have found her to be professional and she comes prepared and focused for the lesson on hand. The progress over the last year has helped tremendously. Ms. K. has challenged our daughter by speaking Spanish at every lesson and this has also helped in her communication with her teachers. The sessions are always well planned and is always on task with work assignments. The rewards have been great. Our daughter started off with a sub-par grade in Spanish and has now passed with a high grade and looking forward to Spanish level 5 in her Senior Year. We highly recommend Ms. K. for your son or daughter for any level of Spanish. Shannon has worked with our daughter's hectic schedule and has been dependable in showing up on time. Our daughter has enjoyed working with Ms. K. and looks forward to working with her again in the upcoming year.
My son is a reluctant Spanish learner and Shannon’s style of teaching is perfect for him. She has helped to boost his confidence in speaking the language. He also likes the way she explains the concepts and ensures that he understands. She is very thorough and concerned with her students’ success. Highly recommend her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
