Attention Parents: Summer is here! Three months with no practice can cause major setbacks. If you don't use it, you lose it. Tutoring helps students demonstrate what they have already learned and can provide valuable opportunities to fill in any gaps from the school year. One on one summer learning just may be the fun and effective and interactive learning environment your child needs so that they can go into the next school year with lots of confidence and ready to learn even more.

I attended a small private school with a very low teacher to student ratio for middle school and high school. I have been a math and science teacher for HISD for two years. All across the district, I have witnessed how difficult it is for students to get the one on one attention they need. As much as I love being in the classroom, nothing helps students understand better like individual attention. My goal is to equip students with the necessary study and linguistic skills that will enable them to excel towards their full potential for the academic school year and beyond. A huge part of achieving this goal is increasing confidence and classroom participation.

I am a native Houstonian who fell in love with Spanish in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have studied Spanish as a second language for more than 15 years. Every student's goals and abilities are different. I tutor students in all levels of Spanish: patiently re-explaining classroom concepts, starting from scratch with zero experience, dusting off rusty conversation skills, Spanish for the workplace, preparing for the IB exam or bilingual STAAR test, and in some cases making sure students know enough to pass.

I began tutoring as an undergraduate and helped over 20 students protect their GPA from the dreaded language requirement. Thanks to weekly sessions, they were able to pass Spanish courses they had previously failed. I was also awarded Best All Around Female Tutor on my campus based on staff and student input. I provide alternate explanations and clarification of classroom instruction, reinforcing audio, written, and oral communication skills, and create study guides and practice exams to ensure student comprehension of difficult material. I assign short post tutoring session exercises that are designed to test students ability to reproduce language independently to ensure they understand the topics covered. I received my bachelor's in Hispanic Studies from The University of Tennessee in 2010. Whether you are struggling with a college, high school, or middle school course, seeking to learn Spanish for fun, or need to get a basic grip on grammar and job specific vocabulary, I will be there help you along the way.

I also have a knack for turning good papers and essays into polished pieces of work. Many people know exactly what they want to say, but don't quite have the way with words to accurately and eloquently convey their thoughts, which is where I come in. I have helped students with admissions essays for undergraduate studies, medical school, and graduate school, as well as essays for everyday classes. Sharing in the excitement and joy of acceptance letters and a students (first) ‘A’ paper is one of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring.

I also tutor students virtually using Google Hangouts, Facetime, and Skype. We've found this creates a record of what was studied for future use, a dynamic learning experience and cuts out unnecessary commuting/traffic headaches. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Thank you for using WyzAnt and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Encouraging and Fun!

As a soon to be college student, I was looking for someone to help me brush up on my Spanish skills, while also increasing my confidence in the language. I remember meeting Shannon during our first lesson and knowing she was the perfect match for me. She jumped right in and we only spoke Spanish during our lessons, which was difficult in the beginning. However, by our last lesson, I didn't want to stop speaking in Spanish. Shannon's method of teaching combined fun and games with learning. I wasn't new to the language, but I needed to work on specific parts of the language. Shannon encouraged me along the way and even though some lessons were tough and I didn't want to think, she was extremely patient. She understood all the aspects of the language and always helped me remember through pictures or other visual aids. Her passion for the language was apparent during every single lesson and she has inspired me to also love the language. Lessons never were a burden to me and she was extremely flexible. I would recommend Shannon to anyone who wants a positive learning environment and someone who genuinely wants you to succeed. She knows what she's doing! I feel completely prepared for my college level Spanish class thanks to Shannon.

Very positive and patient

Shannon has been a very positive, patient, and encouraging Spanish tutor. She is helping me to become fluent in Spanish by challenging me to listen to and speak fluent Spanish. She also assigns fun homework like going to the grocery store and using the Self-checkout station in Spanish, going to a Mexican restaurant and ordering only in Spanish, and watching a movie in the Spanish setting. She is very good at what she does.

Great Tutor

Ms. K. has tutored our daughter for the past year in Spanish. We have found her to be professional and she comes prepared and focused for the lesson on hand. The progress over the last year has helped tremendously. Ms. K. has challenged our daughter by speaking Spanish at every lesson and this has also helped in her communication with her teachers. The sessions are always well planned and is always on task with work assignments. The rewards have been great. Our daughter started off with a sub-par grade in Spanish and has now passed with a high grade and looking forward to Spanish level 5 in her Senior Year. We highly recommend Ms. K. for your son or daughter for any level of Spanish. Shannon has worked with our daughter's hectic schedule and has been dependable in showing up on time. Our daughter has enjoyed working with Ms. K. and looks forward to working with her again in the upcoming year.

Excellent Tutor

My son is a reluctant Spanish learner and Shannon’s style of teaching is perfect for him. She has helped to boost his confidence in speaking the language. He also likes the way she explains the concepts and ensures that he understands. She is very thorough and concerned with her students’ success. Highly recommend her.
