University of Alabama at Birmingham (Biochemistry)
Hi there! My name is Kristin. My love of teaching stems from a lifelong passion for learning. As a budding scientist with a bachelor's of science in biochemistry, I know firsthand that hard work and dedication pay off. If you're struggling in the sciences, I can help you to become an Einstein in no time!
Learning anything can be tremendously fun if one is equipped with the tools to approach the material in a positive way. Therefore, the foundation of my teaching philosophy is that anyone can understand core concepts in ANY subject with the correct cultivation of their personal learning style and some quality effort.
That's right--ANYONE, including you!
As a teaching assistant in college-level general and organic chemistry courses for all four years of my undergraduate education, I developed personalized teaching strategies that make lesson design as easy as 3.14! (That's pi...!) My main areas of expertise lie in science and mathematics (particularly chemistry, genetics, and biology.)
Test prep/study skills are also my specialty, so if you are stressed about your standardized tests, don't be--I can help! My own standardized test scores were incredibly high, so you can benefit greatly from my ACT, SAT, AP and GRE studying and test-taking strategies! I have coached several students and assisted them in raising their scores--many of my students have seen increases in their ACT composite scores of 5 points or more! That's huge, and with the right mindset, anyone can do it!
I create personalized and challenging (but NOT overwhelming) exercises and lessons. I also provide active, ongoing feedback and am always available for questions, even between sessions!
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to improve your test scores and overall learning capabilities. I have a tremendous passion and enthusiasm for learning, and can't WAIT to kindle that excitement in students around Houston!
***NOTE*** : I LOVE to receive feedback and REFUSE to charge for lessons that are substandard--so feel free to let me know how I can improve!!
I am also willing to negotiate my rate depending on your unique circumstances. I do request cancellation NO LESS THAN 3 HOURS prior to meeting, but am more than willing to reschedule lessons that are missed (flexibility is key!) If a lesson is canceled without sufficient notice, I charge 50% of my customary hourly fee to recoup lost time with other potential clients. Hi there! My name is Kristin. Kristin reviewed material with my son for his AP Chemistry test. She was very knowledgeable about the material and explained it well. She was prompt and efficient with their time together. She offered to help him on a periodic basis by phone if he needed it. He made a 99 on his test so, clearly, it was time well spent! I would recommend her highly!
Kristin is amazing! We feel so lucky to have her! She is patient and very understanding of our needs. She goes the extra mile to make sure you are studying in the best possible manner.
Kristin has helped get us organized and on a well thought out path of preparation for the ACT. She's analyzed weaknesses and strengths to maximize valuable study time on areas that can benefit the most from this preparatory exercise. She has excellent recommendations on test taking strategies to avoid common missteps, and her side-by-side practice exam format is less stressful and far more collaborative than traditional, online lecture formats. Great job!
My daughter is much more prepared for her ACT test after meeting with Kristin this month. Kristin is enthusiastic and has helped with my daughter's confidence!
Kristin possesses a unique talent for thoughtfully explaining complex issues in a way that is simple to understand and meaningful. She is very patient and strategic in her tutoring approach. Her love and passion for biology and chemistry makes her a great teacher on these subjects.
She is very thoughtful and considerate of my son’s needs. Kristin is not only thorough in her teaching but also a great tutor who can always be reached by email or phone. She goes over every question you have until you understand it thoroughly. She is very patient and thorough in her explanations, giving you confidence in the subject. Knowledge about the subject isn't the only thing she's good at, it's also pushing her students to help them reach their full potential. She made a substantial impact in helping to prepare my son for SAT test.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I made a 35/36 on the English portion of my ACT. Combined with my strong standardized test-taking skills, my excellent English and reading comprehension and my teaching background, this makes me an excellent guide for this portion of the ACT exam.
I completed a minor in biology as part of my college education. I made "A"s in the following courses: biology I, biology II, cell biology, genetics, molecular genetics, cancer biology, and advanced biochemistry.
I also scored very high on the math/science portion of my ACT and GRE.
I have 4+years of experience teaching chemistry as a college-level teaching assistant. I taught general and organic chemistry labs and study groups, and helped write/give examinations.
I was the lab assistant for the AP chemistry classes in high school, and I made a 5 on my AP chemistry exam.
I have an ACS-Certified bachelor's of science in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry.
In college, I took several advanced mathematics courses, including calculus I-III and differential equations. This has equipped me with an EXCELLENT working knowledge of mathematical theories and basics. In addition to this, I regularly apply basic to intermediate math in real-world situations--namely my current laboratory/clinical research job. With my 4+ years of teaching experience, I feel I can not only effectively communicate the core concepts of elementary math, but ALSO make the learning experience painless and fun!
I made a 5 on my AP literature exam in high school. I also scored 36/36 on the reading portion of my ACT and 35/36 on the English portion. More recently, I scored 770/800 on the qualitative (reading/writing) portion of my GRE. Though the vast majority of my college education was centered around the sciences, I took several writing workshops and wrote papers for peer-reviewed scientific journals during my time in school.
I took both genetics and molecular genetics in college and made an A in both subjects. As a part of my current research position at MD Anderson Cancer Center, I do a lot of hands-on work and in-depth reading in cancer genetics. I have a high level of both textbook comprehension and real-world experience in the subject. Though I am not an expert, I feel supremely confident that I could communicate the core concepts of genetics to students in an accessible manner.
I have tutored several students in Geometry and helped them to raise their scores and increase their comprehension of the subject considerably!
I served as the Vice President and Public Relations Executive for an interfaith group on my college campus for two years. In that time, I organized and participated in multiple public debates and lectures, both as a featured speaker and as a host.
In addition, my job requires me to give presentations of scientific data to scientists and physicians in my field.
I completed coursework in Public Speaking in college with an A.
I taught for four years and have an excellent grasp on communicating ideas clearly to large groups.
I have always been an avid reader--at one point, I read nearly 1,000 books in one year! This has led to a very high reading comprehension, which shows through in my standardized test scores (36/36 on Reading portion of ACT, 770/800 on qualitative portion of GRE). I am not only adept at picking up on/analyzing the central concepts of literature, but ALSO in simplifying and communicating those concepts to make them easier for students to digest/comprehend. My 4+ years of teaching experience allow me to be an effective instructor in reading comprehension.
As a former spelling bee champion (times three!) and an avid reader with a great memory for words, I can assist students in learning to become great spellers themselves. Learning to spell goes hand-in-hand with increasing reading comprehension, and my standardized test scores in verbal reasoning have always been excellent (35/36 on Reading ACT, 770/800 on Qualitative GRE). When combined with my teaching experience, my own knowledge can be of great benefit to my students.
Through my job as a teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry at my university, I created lessons and strategies for students to help them study effectively for exams. I often worked with small groups, so I could tailor a plan to each student that fit their specific learning style. My pre-exam prep involved communicating with professors and researching exam material in order to formulate mock exams and worksheets that would help the students test their knowledge and focus their energy on those areas in which they were least confident. In this way, I helped several students to incorporate effective studying strategies in their coursework.
As a former spelling bee champion with an avid love of books and words, I have a very extensive lexicon and absolutely adore learning new words with which I can express ideas. I also made a 770/800 on the qualitative portion of my GRE, which is very vocabulary-intensive. Therefore, I also enjoy teaching students how to use the English language to its fullest potential. With 4+ years of teaching experience, I can very effectively communicate core concepts and tailor the learning experience to the individual student.
