Learning anything can be tremendously fun if one is equipped with the tools to approach the material in a positive way. Therefore, the foundation of my teaching philosophy is that anyone can understand core concepts in ANY subject with the correct cultivation of their personal learning style and some quality effort.

As a teaching assistant in college-level general and organic chemistry courses for all four years of my undergraduate education, I developed personalized teaching strategies that make lesson design as easy as 3.14! (That's pi...!) My main areas of expertise lie in science and mathematics (particularly chemistry, genetics, and biology.)
Test prep/study skills are also my specialty, so if you are stressed about your standardized tests, don't be--I can help! My own standardized test scores were incredibly high, so you can benefit greatly from my ACT, SAT, AP and GRE studying and test-taking strategies! I have coached several students and assisted them in raising their scores--many of my students have seen increases in their ACT composite scores of 5 points or more! That's huge, and with the right mindset, anyone can do it!
I create personalized and challenging (but NOT overwhelming) exercises and lessons. I also provide active, ongoing feedback and am always available for questions, even between sessions!

I do request cancellation NO LESS THAN 3 HOURS prior to meeting, but am more than willing to reschedule lessons that are missed (flexibility is key!) Kristin reviewed material with my son for his AP Chemistry test. She was very knowledgeable about the material and explained it well. She was prompt and efficient with their time together. She offered to help him on a periodic basis by phone if he needed it. He made a 99 on his test so, clearly, it was time well spent! I would recommend her highly!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I made a 35/36 on the English portion of my ACT. Combined with my strong standardized test-taking skills, my excellent English and reading comprehension and my teaching background, this makes me an excellent guide for this portion of the ACT exam.
I completed a minor in biology as part of my college education. I made "A"s in the following courses: biology I, biology II, cell biology, genetics, molecular genetics, cancer biology, and advanced biochemistry.
I also scored very high on the math/science portion of my ACT and GRE.

I made a 5 on my AP literature exam in high school. I also scored 36/36 on the reading portion of my ACT and 35/36 on the English portion. More recently, I scored 770/800 on the qualitative (reading/writing) portion of my GRE. Though the vast majority of my college education was centered around the sciences, I took several writing workshops and wrote papers for peer-reviewed scientific journals during my time in school.
I took both genetics and molecular genetics in college and made an A in both subjects. As a part of my current research position at MD Anderson Cancer Center, I do a lot of hands-on work and in-depth reading in cancer genetics. I have a high level of both textbook comprehension and real-world experience in the subject. Though I am not an expert, I feel supremely confident that I could communicate the core concepts of genetics to students in an accessible manner.

I am not only adept at picking up on/analyzing the central concepts of literature, but ALSO in simplifying and communicating those concepts to make them easier for students to digest/comprehend. My 4+ years of teaching experience allow me to be an effective instructor in reading comprehension.
As a former spelling bee champion (times three!) and an avid reader with a great memory for words, I can assist students in learning to become great spellers themselves. Learning to spell goes hand-in-hand with increasing reading comprehension, and my standardized test scores in verbal reasoning have always been excellent (35/36 on Reading ACT, 770/800 on Qualitative GRE). When combined with my teaching experience, my own knowledge can be of great benefit to my students.
Through my job as a teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry at my university, I created lessons and strategies for students to help them study effectively for exams. I often worked with small groups, so I could tailor a plan to each student that fit their specific learning style. My pre-exam prep involved communicating with professors and researching exam material in order to formulate mock exams and worksheets that would help the students test their knowledge and focus their energy on those areas in which they were least confident. In this way, I helped several students to incorporate effective studying strategies in their coursework.
