About MJ

As a life-long learner and experienced educator who loves to read, to write, and to explore language, history, literature, and art, I want to help you smooth out the rough patches on your educational path.

I am certified to teach English, Speech, and LLD by the state of Texas, have been awarded fellowships to two national writing projects, and served as State of Texas Textbook Adviser. For both my Bachelor's degree and my Master's degree, I went above and beyond the required minimum credits in order to include a variety of courses that I judged as important to rounding out my education. For over 15 years I have taught my subjects at all grade and ability levels for which I am certified around the state of Texas.

My career as a professional writer has included stints as a writer of educational test preparation materials to coach students in mastering standardized tests, a reporter and feature writer for three community newspapers, and technical writer and editor both at Hewlett-Packard and at the NASA Johnson Space Center.

Being able to see connections in various subjects then distill and communicate those ideas clearly is the primary characteristic of an educated person. I analyze strengths and weaknesses to customize strategies that work best for every student or client. I give them the tools they need to map out successful pathways for themselves.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree - Speech and English Education. I'm certified by the state of Texas to teach Speech and English in grades 8 - 12.

I have fifteen years of experience teaching English and Speech in grades 8 - 12 across the state of Texas. I've taught students of all level abilities from LLD to Gifted and Talented.

Grammar

I was frustrated when I first started teaching grammar because so many students came to me not understanding grammar at all. My job as a teacher is to equip my students with all the tools they need to be independent and skillful learners.

I devised a method of teaching students grammar that never failed - at any grade level. Every student left my classroom with a system for analyzing parts of speech and parts of a sentence that enabled them to use words correctly, construct powerful sentences and paragraphs, and then punctuate them correctly.

"Thank you so much, Ms. Taylor. I never understood it before." That was the comment I heard from 8th graders up to 12th graders alike.

Literature

I'm certified to teach English Language Arts in the state of Texas for grades 8 - 12.
I'm the district textbook chairman for literature textbook adoption and the state of Texas textbook advisor.

I use analytical techniques and tools to unlock the meaning of literature for students. Proving a point by logical argumentation and citation of supporting text from the literary selection help students see connections, realize the connection between actions and results, see connections in literature to their own lives, and learn to love the beauty of literature at any age.

I use close reading of the text along with careful analysis and reasoning to unlock the meaning of literary selections, to see similarities and differences between literary selections, and to recognize how literature from any period is relevant to our lives today.

Proofreading

As a keen grammarian and experienced technical writer and editor, I spot and correct errors that might otherwise be overlooked but which may very well compromise the meaning of a sentence or passage.

I help students acquire the tools and skills to analyze their own writing and to know exactly where to place a comma, semi-colon, or capital letter based on the understanding they develop.

I teach them to "see" what I see and understand sentences, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and correct word usage so that they become fluent and confident communicators.

In various positions, I have achieved higher scores on proofreading screening tests than 98% of the other candidates. Powerful ideas deserve to be conveyed in powerful and clear text.

Public Speaking

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and English Education from the University of Houston and am certified to teach Speech in the state of Texas. Speech certification means that I am qualified to teach all subjects related to public speaking including dramatic interpretation, informative speaking, argumentation and debate, and all related forms of public speaking. I coached students for speech tournaments in the areas of public speaking and interpretation.

Speech

I graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and English Education and am certified to teach Speech in the state of Texas.

Theatre

I won a scholarship to do Summer Stock Theatre at the University of Southern Mississippi and went to college for that opportunity the day after I graduated from high school. I have participated in a number of school and community theatre productions and acquired a total of 12 quarter hours and 12 semester hours toward certification. As a teacher, I assisted with the theatre arts productions in all areas including technical theatre and dramatic interpretation.

Here is a sample of my college coursework: Stage Mov't & Pantomime, Stage Mov't & Voice, Summer Theatre I, Summer Theatre II, Drama Teacher's Workshop, Performance, Tech Theatre Techniques, Acting

I have also been active with the community theatres in several locations.

Vocabulary

I possess an extensive vocabulary and created a year long plan to help my students do the same while bolstering their ability to analyze word components for PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests. We learned Greek roots as well as the English spelling and the definition of the entire word. Then students were able to analyze any word with a similar root and have a good idea of the word's definition. Example: "hologram" derives from "holos" meaning "whole" or "three-dimensional" and "graphien" which means "to write". A "hologram" is a three dimensional projection of an object.

Knowing where words came from and their derivations makes students into word detectives. It is amazing to see how they discover connections and how they can analyze longer words by knowing the meanings of their component parts.

Writing

Always a fluent writer myself, I puzzle over the best way to teach my English students better ways to write until I applied for and was awarded graduate fellowships in two national writing projects.

The Greater Houston Area Project is based on the Bay Area Project model and was an amazing experience. I left it with renewed techniques and strategies that really made student compositions come to life and helped many received awards for their writing.

The next project was based on the New Jersey Writing Project and furnished all graduate fellows with additional techniques and strategies preferred by the state of Texas for classroom use statewide.

I have also worked as a professional writer, reporter, feature writer, and educational writer. This led to a position at NASA's Johnson Space Center as Senior Technical Writer and Editor for the Engineering Directorate.
