St. Mary's College (English)
I received a BA from St. Mary's College in 2006 and am currently enrolled in the Texas Teachers Certification program. My coursework includes classes in Exceptionality, Educational Psychology, Theories of Cognition, and Children/Young Adult literature. I have had over four years of tutoring experience with students ages 6 to adult. This includes experience with GT students, ESL, and individuals with specific learning disabilities.
As an undergraduate, I researched and compared various reading curriculum for dyslexic students. I favor a multi-sensory, phonics based approach for teaching reading. When working with older students, I emphasize strategies for reading comprehension and mastery of discrete writing skills. I try to remind teenagers that verbal expression will be their key to success in college and beyond.
I have a very relaxed, non directive teaching style. However, if a student needs more support, I will plan out lessons and goals for each session. I am well versed in the content of the TAKS test, as well as the ACT and SAT. I can integrate test preparation into our sessions if needed.
I love teaching reading and language arts. My goal is to earn a M.Ed in Reading Curriculum and Instruction, as well as an MFA in poetry. In my spare time, I am at work on a children's novel. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had several years of experience helping school aged students. I have worked as a tutor, an interning therapist, and a substitute teacher. My specific area of expertise relates to learning differences and developmental challenges.
I obtained Bachelor's degree in English from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 2006. I have 3 years of experience tutoring ESL and developmental reading with students of all ages. I am familiar with the Orton Gillingham method of remediation, as well as other approaches. I also love working with older students on term papers and application essays. I am well versed in world literature and have a remarkable verbal memory. I believe that I would be perfect for a student who has had limited success with traditional teaching methods.
I obtained a B.A. from St. Mary's College with a major in English.
I have helped students of all grade levels improve their writing. No two papers are the same, and my goal is to help students find their own voice.
