About Jamie

I am eager to re-enter the field of education. I am passionate about guiding students toward achieving their full potential. Every child is unique and special, and I believe finding the key to unlocking their talents is an integral part of an educational experience. For some children the key may be a traditional route that may include one on one tutoring; for other children it may include gaming, technology integration, experiential learning, or other methodologies. I am a certified gifted resource specialist and secondary social studies teacher in Virginia. I have taught social studies in middle and high school, and I have taught science, language arts, and math in middle and elementary schools.

In my prior position, as a gifted resource specialist, I worked face-to face with students in addition to working with cluster teachers, other school personnel, and organizations to facilitate direct services. Demonstration teaching, collegial sharing, collaborative planning, peer coaching and providing staff development opportunities were essential components of my position. I also created after school activities, compiled and analyzed data, tutored my students when needed, and created learning units and plans aligned with state and district standards.

In order for this experience to be successful for your child, I would like to request your child take an online assessment prepared by me based on information provided by you to determine areas of strength and areas that need improvement based on the essential questions and objectives of the subject area (state and district or school standards). The assessment would be provided to you for your child prior to our first session with a 10-15 minute parent/child information session at the beginning of the first lesson. This will allow for maximum utilization of your child's time and your money in order to achieve positive results as quickly as possible. Sometimes study skills and organization skills are as important to the success of a student as content knowledge. Thank you for taking the time to consider me as your child's tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I am certified in Virginia as a social studies teacher whose certification will need to be updated June 2015. As the lead teacher of social studies for a middle and elementary school in California, I wrote social studies curriculum, taught professional development classes, and organized "Big Trips" aligned with the standards and objectives to bring experiential learning to the students. I also taught social studies classes for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th grade and high school courses, as well. I have the ability to make social studies come alive for my students, thereby making it more than teaching to the test while maintaining standardized test scores in the 90th and above percentile.

Study Skills

I am certified as a gifted resource specialist in the state of Virginia. Extensive tutoring of my students who were having difficulty in any content area or who were twice exceptional was an integral part of my job.
