About Balaji

Teaching in the traditional sense involves imparting knowledge. My teaching philosophy can be summed up by Clay P. Bedford - You can teach a student a lesson for a day, but if you teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. Effective learning occurs when the subject is made interesting enough to invoke the student's curiosity about the topic, its applications and future use.

My tutoring experience began in 1992 following my Bachelor's degree where I taught high school math and science. This was followed by teaching assistantship for undergraduate biology labs at University of Houston, Houston, TX. After my PhD, I was selected as a trainee for scientific teaching course sponsored by the National Science Foundation and I applied these in my teaching career since 2010 at three institutions - University of St. Thomas, Houston teaching biology and neuroscience to undergraduates; Houston Community College System, teaching biology, nutrition and anatomy/physiology to associate degree students following high school diploma, where I also taught high school seniors biology; and University of Texas Medical Branch where I trained several undergraduate, graduates in bench science and advanced courses in neuroscience and biology.

During these years, I have gained expertise in delivering concepts of biology that include neuroscience, evolution, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, zoology as well as chemistry, english, pharmacology and math. I have the capacity to tutor in math and science from high school to undergraduate level, both in-person and online.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

My Master's and PhD was done with fruit flies - the world's most studied genetic species. I conducted many many genetic crosses and performed many molecular genetic studies at this stage and am still conducting them as part of my research endeavors. Moreover, I have been teaching Genetics as a chapter for Biology at the Undergraduate level since 2010 in two different institutions.

Zoology

I have taken Zoology as my Bachelor's course. In addition, I have taught Zoology as General Biology II in classification of animals at the Undergraduate level and also taught most of the anatomy and physiology for different animals while teaching the A&P course at the Houston Community College.
