About Norman

Hi Students!

My name is Norman and my greatest gift is the ability to unlock your understanding of just about anything. If its something I can do, then you can do it, too!

At present, I am a postdoctoral associate in the Texas Medical Center doing biomedical research. I received my PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2009 from Rutgers University and worked for several years in the biotech industry. I then taught Biology and Biotechnology for two years as an instructor at a local college. In my college years, I minored in Mathematics and received certification to teach high school Mathematics.

I have a passion for science and logical thinking. Subjects I tutor include: Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Math, Symbolic Logic and other related topics.

During my PhD study, my research advisor most often turned to me to mentor the students who entered our laboratory to guide their summer and senior year research projects. As a teaching assistant in Biomedical Transport Phenomena and Biomechanics, I graded numerous homework assignments, tutored students on an individual basis during my office hours and held in-class review sessions before exams. I have also conducted Biomedical Engineering laboratories, guiding students through experiments. On several occasions I was invited to lecture at colleges and universities to undergraduate students in science. I can often connect to my audience through analogy to commonly understood concepts and by demonstrating relevance of the lecture material to practical application in industry and technology.

On the other side of education, I have strong language and linguistic ability. I speak proficient Chinese and have knowledge of Spanish and American Sign Language. In English, I enjoy discussing roots of words, discovering nmeumonics to memorize vocabulary and can give advice on tongue position and cadence for foreigners who want to improve their accent.

My methods are wide-ranging including visual (images) and sound, analogies between complex and simple things and breaking any task down into simple steps. Often, we can find a clear and logical reason for each step in a process or at least find an interesting way to remember that step.

I am passionate about helping students succeed and about the subjects I tutor. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I received my minor in mathematics at SUNY Buffalo in conjunction with my undergraduate major in mechanical engineering.

Upon applying to graduate school in biomedical engineering, I scored 750 on the Math section of the GRE and took advanced math courses as part of the program.

Therefore, I am confident in my math ability and happy to tutor in algebra, geometry, etc.

Algebra 2

I received my minor in mathematics at SUNY Buffalo in conjunction with my undergraduate major in mechanical engineering.

Upon applying to graduate school in biomedical engineering, I scored 750 on the Math section of the GRE and took advanced math courses as part of the program.

Therefore, I am confident in my math ability and happy to tutor in algebra, geometry, etc.

Chinese

I completed my undergraduate minor in Mandarin Chinese at SUNY Buffalo (including 5 courses up to the 400 level, reading and analyzing the Chinese short stories of Lu Xun). I spent one year in Beijing, China, as a foreign exchange student. Later, employed as a product engineer, I returned to China (Shanghai) twice on manufacturing assignments and often spoke in Chinese on conference calls with manufacturing engineers to explain details of product issues. I consider myself "proficient" in Mandarin speaking and writing and would love tutor it at the elementary level.

Being quite visual, I have a natural aptitude for geometry and may be able to teach the student to "see" many of the answers just by looking at or thinking about a picture.

An Ideal Tutor — It would be great to have a supply of teachers like Norman available for any student at any age. We called for a tutor to help keep our son engaged and interested in school. Norman could not be better qualified because he is so great at being engaged that it rubs off immediately! He has so many lively approaches to a variety of subjects. He uses discussion techniques which enable him to relate t ...
