My name is Devon, and if you need assistance in English, French, or Spanish, look no further! I am enthusiastic about helping students to become more adept in speaking, reading, and writing any or all three of these languages, regardless of a student's age or prior level of knowledge.
My experience with French and Spanish comes primarily from direct cultural immersion. I have studied French since I was six years old and have lived abroad with French-speaking host families in Montreal, Nice, and Montpellier. The summer after high school I moved to Antigua, Guatemala and lived with a Spanish speaking family. After I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2010 with a degree in Spanish and a minor in French, I taught ESL classes at a literacy center in Austin to Spanish and French speaking adults who could not speak or read English. About a year ago I moved to Hong Kong and began working at a tutoring center; my classes were varied and I tutored students from 15 months to 15 years old in English. Depending on the age group of any given class, I worked with my students on grammar, phonics, vocabulary, writing, literature, and current events. I recently returned to Houston after a year in Hong Kong and am eager to begin teaching again.
I strongly believe in the effectiveness of learning one-on-one or in small groups. Whether my classes have one student or six, I make sure each and every person I teach receives personalized attention. I strive to make any subject I teach both interesting and accessible. Whether you want to learn a new language or simply study your own in a more in-depth way, you are opening a doorway of communication. I can help you open that door more easily!
I look forward to hearing from and working with you,

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a French tutor for three years- I studied French at University of Texas at Austin. With regards to teaching language, I appeal to the aural, visual, and kinesthetic learning style of each student. I put much emphasis on retention; thus part of each tutoring session is devoted to conversation pertaining to the lessons that we just studied.
With regards to teaching language, I appeal to the aural, visual, and kinesthetic learning of each student. I emphasize correct pronunciation, spelling, and writing. At least fifteen to twenty minutes of class time is devoted to reciting what the student has learned, and, as he or she progresses, that time will be used for simple conversation. In this way the time allotted is maximized by combining an academic setting with immersion. I also have experience in Spanish civilization and Latin American literature.
