Houston native, born and raised! I have a degree in English Literature with a minor in World Cultures and Literatures from the University of Houston. I went from a high school graduate at the bottom of the third quarter to a Magna Cum Laude university graduate, simply because I applied myself to the task and taught myself study skills I'd never had in high school. I pass on those same skills to my students and continue to apply them in my own work as a tutor: I work to stay a step ahead of my students, read as much of the material my students are reading as I can and prepare for each history session by reviewing material and bringing books or review sheets that might be helpful for the session. If I have enough heads up, I can also create new review sheets tailored to the student's needs.
I became a tutor because it is an opportunity to further do what I consider my calling: help students express themselves. I love it. It’s as easy as breathing. I work with students on study skills, coursework, test prep, college guidance, and ESL. My favorite subjects to tutor are ESL, US history, writing, SAT/ACT verbal, AP English language and composition, and college essays. I also love grammar and vocabulary! "My son needs to learn 300 words and their accompanying synonyms"...I heard that recently and the idea of it was actually exciting because words are fun for me!
I believe that doing well in verbal subjects requires a balance of two factors: 1, understanding what the teachers want and giving it to them ("Give the people what they want", I often say), and 2, figuring out what you, the student, have to say about a subject. Have an opinion! Then you combine your thoughts with the teacher's expectations in a thoughtful, logical sequence. Sound difficult? It's really not! I'm here to show you how to make that happen. And once you learn it, you might not even need me anymore...and I'm okay with that. My way is to teach students how to fish rather than do the fishing for them. I believe this approach to teaching, as well as reliability and ability to work with diverse personalities, is what makes me a client favorite.
I've found that when it comes to tutoring, there are as many student goals as there are students. Everyone is different: A football player who must maintain a B in English but can't make heads or tails of Pride and Prejudice...a valedictorian used to succeeding through sheer determination, but scared to death she doesn't have anything worthy to say in her personal statement to her dream college...or a student recently immigrated to the US who needs to learn how to communicate his brilliant thoughts in a language he doesn't yet have a complete grasp of. My son LOVES Lisa! He actually looks forward to his tutor sessions and has been eager to practice his reading after her first session. We have really lucked out finding her.
Lisa has been always prepared when she came to my house. We had a lot of discussion to improve our time. I asked a lot and she answered me until I got completely understood. Her homework was well designed with latest issues or historical issues to make me interested in. I was struggling in my college American Literature course, mainly with the writing assignments. I started working with Lisa about halfway through the course and managed to pull my grade up to an A! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
At the University of Houston I took courses in Classical Literature and Literary Theory, which focused on the works and philosophies of Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Sappho, Aristotle, Plato, Sophocles and Euripides. I also took three years of Latin. I am well qualified to tutor students in Greek and Roman mythology, Homer's Odyssey, and Ovid's Oedipus Rex. Aside from formal education, it is really my lifelong interest in the subject that makes me a great classics tutor. For mythology, for instance, I help students learn the gods and goddesses and their traits using picture books I loved as a child. It is so much easier and more interesting to students than memorizing a list! I also have thorough knowledge (and an extra copy) of Edith Hamilton's Mythology because it was one of my favorite books growing up, and I read it many times just for fun. For the "big picture" student, I also have knowledge and reference books that I can use to help put classical texts into historical perspective.
Students I have helped have gone on to UT, A&M, Georgetown, UPenn, Michigan and Georgia among others. I love college counseling because it is an opportunity to help the students tell their stories and learn valuable lessons on writing at the college level at the same time.
I can help in many stages of the process, from helping decide whether a school is right to you, to brainstorming for essays, managing deadlines, to pressing the "submit" button. One of the biggest ways I help is in relieving stress by making the process not so scary. I also help students avoid common pitfalls, like choosing popular and played-out topics, or choosing colleges for the wrong reasons. The college admissions process can be intimidating and stressful for everyone involved, but I am here to make it smoother, more productive, and often a surprisingly informative learning (and sometimes even family bonding) experience.
I have taught ESL students aged 4 and up from a variety of countries. My style of teaching has developed through years of experience paying close attention to what helps students the best and fastest. This means we use many different resources - workbooks, conversation, materials I've created, reading aloud, watching television, even children's books - which I select based on each client's individual needs and goals. Sessions tend to focus on accent and pronunciation, and I address grammar problems as we come to them. I try to keep my sessions fun and I'm always non-judgmental, but I am also tough. If it takes you a hundred tries, we're going to do it a hundred times until it's right! I tutor ESL one-on-one or to groups of five or less students.
I teach grammar to students from junior high through adult, native English speakers as well as ESL students from a variety of countries. My approach is to teach grammar in a practical way, using sentences that incorporate everyday situations and phrases. The goal is to show students that grammar is something students already understand because they use it every day in their speech and writing; they just don't know the technical terms for everything. My method takes the intimidation out of learning the subject and gives students information they can use not only in the classroom but also on standardized tests like the ACT and SAT.
At the University of Houston I took specialized courses in Ancient literature (mythology and classics), Literary theory, African American lit, Mexican American lit, Victorian lit and poetry including Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice, Ancient and Modern British Literature from Beowulf to works by Shakespeare to A Tale of Two Cities, American literature from Moby Dick, the Scarlet Letter and Huck Finn to works by Jonathan Safran Foer and Joan Didion. I have a thorough understanding of the junior high and high school literature curriculum, and if I have not read something a student is reading, I read it too. In fact, I enjoy reading books with the students because I can teach with fresh eyes and show the students a working example of how to read the text to meet the teacher's expectations.
