I am a career academic guide with a Bachelor's degree in English Writing and a Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have fourteen years of experience both in the United States and abroad and have successfully engaged students from ages five to sixty-five.
My experience with children includes stints in China, Japan, and Mexico teaching elementary and junior high students English as a Foreign Language. Domestically, I have spent several years in public schools as an Educational Assistant and Substitute teacher. In all contexts, I garnered a reputation as a dependable educator, having effectively instructed and tutored students primarily in all aspects the English language, but also occasionally in math and art.
While in graduate school, I worked as a writing tutor for native and non-native English speakers. I strove to move far beyond simply saying, "This is wrong; here is the correct way." Instead, I pointed out my clients' strengths and weaknesses, encouraging them to use their knowledge to discover how to correct their errors themselves. I also provided sound advice on how they could enhance their style and structure.
Furthermore, I have worked as an English as a Second Language Instructor at two American universities. At both, I regularly made an effort to use the knowledge base and skill set I strengthened as a TESOL graduate student. I was given the freedom to incorporate innovative teaching approaches in order to further stimulate my students' enthusiasm and help them build their confidence in a safe environment.
Currently, I am an ESL Instructor at Bilingual Education Institute (BEI) in Houston, Texas. I have established a solid reputation as a sensitive and reliable teacher to students all over the world in a variety of capacities, including group and private instruction, Intensive English, Refugee, TOEFL, and Corporate Training courses at all skill levels. Many students have requested me as their teacher for future courses due to my serious approach, easygoing attitude and adaptability to their individual needs and learning styles.
Overall, I adhere to my philosophy that learners must be empowered and given autonomy in all facets of the learning experience. I act as a dynamic coach as I allow learners to navigate their way through the nuances of the target subject. Moreover, I make it a point not to underestimate their intelligence or abilities, preferring to show them that they have numerous tools at their disposal to suit their intelligence type and skill level.

I got in touch with Evan asking for a lesson in the very short term. He replied immediately and made himself available during the weekend. The class was excellent. He understood what I was looking for and made a good use of my time. I'll definitively use his help again in the future.
Thank you for the great feedback, Mario! I enjoyed the lesson and would be happy to tutor you again.
Evan has been very helpful. I will recommend him as a teacher without any hesitation. The lesson was pleasant. He gave me what I needed. He has a general American accent which is perfect to learn.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I possess approximately five years of combined experience as a substitute teacher, teacher's assistant and tutor in elementary school. I guided students primarily in reading, writing, and to a lesser degree in math, science and art. I was also an elementary EFL instructor in China and Japan. With all this diverse experience, I am both comfortable and confident working with elementary school children.
I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from a highly regarded school. I underwent rigorous theoretical and practical training that included peer teaching and mentoring, a rewarding internship in Mexico, and excellent feedback from instructors that are well-known in the field. My professional experience includes teaching English as a Foreign Language in China and Japan, as well as more that six years teaching ESL in American universities and language schools.
I began playing golf when I was 12 years old, and my elder golf partners told me that I possessed a natural talent. During the latter part of junior high and earlier part of high school, I took lessons to improve my swing consistency. Moreover, I stayed on the golf team throughout high school, lettering in my senior year. I have on occasion provided tips for my playing partners that had little experience. I believe that I would be successful at guiding beginners.
As a graduate student, I analyzed grammar in depth as a part of my training to become a more adept ESOL Instructor. Since graduating, I have taught numerous advanced grammar courses in Intensive English Programs. I have also done some editing work and writing tutoring; this experience has greatly enhanced my ability to detect grammatical and structural errors in writing by both native and nonnative speakers of English.
