Texas A&M University (Master's)
My background is in structural engineering. I completed my masters degree from A&M in December 2010 and have been working in Houston since. I worked in the offshore oil industry from January 2010 to March 2015, working as an engineer by day and moonlighting as a tutor by night. I took on my first formal teaching assignment in January 2015. I've found I greatly enjoy working as a professor, and it has grown into my primary occupation.
I work full time as an engineering professor for UT Tyler Houston Engineering Center, and I adjunct a few courses for Houston Community College. I teach various engineering courses from the freshman to senior level. My teaching efforts take up the vast majority of my time, but I do still tutor some students on the side as my schedule allows.
I've been tutoring for many years, even since I was in high school myself. I offer tutoring in a multitude of subjects, but specialize in high school and college level mathematics, physics, chemistry, and statistics courses. I also offer tutoring in preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, etc. I have been tutoring on and off since 2002, and I can help you or your student through these often challenging courses. Currently, I am mainly signing up students who are able to come to me at my home near Westpark Drive and Dairy Ashford.
I've worked with students throughout the Houston area, including areas such as Bellaire, Rice, Memorial, Spring Branch, Westchase, Sugar Land, Katy, Richmond, and many others.
The rate shown on this page is my rate for a student to come to me. Currently my schedule is pretty packed and I'm mainly looking for students who are willing to travel. If I need to travel to a student, the rate is higher to cover the drive. I also offer group sessions and am perfectly happy working with a group of students. My rate is the same whether I'm working with one or multiple students simultaneously, so for students on a tight budget, that is an option. I also offer lower hourly rates for sessions beyond the standard one hour.
My cancellation policy is that a lesson must be cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time. For a lesson cancelled within 24 hours, I may charge a missed lesson fee equal to one-half of the lesson cost, though I may waive this at my digression. For no-shows, I will charge a missed lesson fee equal to the cost of the session. My background is in structural engineering. Our 11th grade student was having a hard time transitioning to a new school and a new town, and some of her grades reflected this, including Chemistry. We realized it was necessary to find a tutor immediately as there were tests coming up and homework due and there was no time to mess around trying to muddle through the text book and "negotiate" due dates with the teacher. It was especially not helpful to punish our student or stress her out more by showing our disappointment and threatening to take away privileges. She needed REAL help. I did my research, but promptly settled on WyzAnt and Tanya. I was nervous because we didn't have any time to spare and a bad tutor would have been a waste of time, not to mention, money. Tanya showed up on time, quickly introduced herself, sat down with our student at the table and got to work. To put things into perspective, our daughter got a 33 on the first test and was so stressed out it was frightening. Tanya worked with her one night, the next day our daughter took her second test. I was hoping for passing. She got an 81. It was astonishing. Not only did our daughter make a decent grade on this next test, she's UNDERSTANDING the material, which helps her for a lifetime! Am I singing Tanya's praises? Yes, yes I am. I am a mother who hates the stress our kids are under, and a mother who is enormously grateful when a solution is found.
My daughter had a Precalculus session today. In this session, continued study or basic precalculus topics. In particular, looked at rational functions and their graphs, including finding asymptotes, intercepts, and a variety of other properties. Tanya made a great lesson to let my daughter understood quite well.
We are so glad we found Tanya! She has an in-depth background on a number of technical subjects from math to chemistry to physics. She is very polite, kind, and prompt!
Tanya was so good to my son. He understood everything she taught today's lesson. She recommended a book for him to study for next grade-8th. I and my son are 100% satisfied. Thank you Tanya.
My daughter asked to go to tutoring for chemistry but didn't expect it to be a great experience. She was pleasantly surprised and told me the time passed quickly. She didn't have a lot of time and got a much better understanding that in class. I would definitely recommend Tanya as a tutor. She was very flexible and got good results. We will use her again to tutor in Algebra 2.
She helped my sister gain a clear view of how to approach chemistry as well as go in detail with practice problems.
She is great and a lot of background experience, she is very nice and makes learning fun! She doesn't rush you or judge you if you don't know the material. Tanya is very helpful!
My daughter has improved steadily with Tanya's help. She has consolidated concepts that were unclear for her before the tutoring sessions began. We will be scheduling more sessions as we see Aurora's skill becoming stronger
Thank you Tanya for your help. My daughter felt really comfortable with how you delivered the work to her. Because of you she is more confident in Physics.
Last year was AP Physics, this year calculus. I believe the continuity helps. She is patient and knowledgeable. My daughter is quite pleased.
I was very unsure if I would pass my calculus 3 class so I asked for Tanya's help with my last exam and with my final. After three sessions together I passed my class with a B! Tanya helped me learn different concepts for my multi variable calculus class. She clearly explained everything and made sure I understood before moving on. She did a great job using our time wisely and getting through a lot of material. Tanya is easy to understand and she was very familiar with the material in my multi variable calculus class.
Tanya taught my daughter Thermodynamics and Electricity and Magnetism as a part of a College Physics course.
Tanya is an excellent tutor. She has very good content knowledge and prepares her lessons well. She caters well to a student's need and teaches with full enthusiasm. It is rare to find tutors like Tanya. I wish her the very best and highly recommend her.
She is very well prepared for her lessons. She makes learning enjoyable. Her teaching style engages her student. We are glad that we have found her.
Tanya is extremely knowledgeable and knows how to teach algebra to those who do not have a "brain for Math". She worked with my son for just a few weeks and he went from getting D's in Algebra to an A. We were absolutely amazed! Most of all she was dedicated to my son's success, she even tutored on a holiday to make sure he was ready for his test. She is a godsend. I would highly recommend her to anyone struggling with Math. She is the answer:)
My daughter was 3 weeks away from finals. With Tanya's help she was able to bring her precalculus grade up and passed her final! Tanya was knowledgeable, patient and flexible.
The only obstacle I had between graduating was Calculus 2 and with Tanya's help (no seriously I've had other calc 2 tutors) I not only passed but I got a great grade. She was always so encouraging and patient with me and makes time for you no matter how busy her schedule is. I'm really grateful for her help she's an awesome tutor! I would definitely recommend her.
Tanya has been tutoring my high-schoolers in math and science. They are all doing well in these classes and are enjoying the subjects. Tanya relates well to the kids and they have fun while learning the hard stuff with her.
Tanya was able to start working with my daughter, tutoring her in Algebra I at the beginning of the school year when it became obvious that my daughter was already struggling - and getting a low grade. Tanya meets with my daughter weekly, and she is so relieved to be working with someone who can explain her math to her in way that she can understand. Grades have noticeably improved. Above all, my daughter has a great time with Tanya during her sessions; I hear a lot of laughing throughout the hour.
Tanya was very patient with my son. She helped my son gain a greater knowledge of his geometry problems. I look forward to having her work with him again.
We are in our 3rd week and my son's test grade has improved exponentially! I am looking forward to his continued improvement!
Excellent teacher, very organized, and knowledgeable about chemistry. Wish she had more time.
Tanya tutored my son for both AP Calculus BC and AP Chemistry. She achieved great results for him and he got a 5 on both the tests. Highly recommend.
My daughter is very comfortable with Tanya. She also feels she is getting the help she needs for her GED test. Tanya is always easy to reach also.
Tanya has been tutoring me the past couple of months through a summer College Algebra class. I cannot say enough good things about her. She knew the material off the top of her head and did not require any "review", which said a lot to me. She is extremely smart, but had a good way of explaining things so that I could grasp the material. She was very accommodating to my needs - meeting multiple times a week in the evenings and on weekends. I have absolutely no problem giving her the highest recommendation possible for ANY subject she feels qualified to tutor.
Tanya has quickly been able to get my son up to speed in Chemistry. I recommend her. She is a good communicator and understands her subjects. My son told me he learned more from her in one hour than he did the entire year in class.
5/30/14 Post Final Update: My son just took his final and made a 79 which is downright amazing. In 3 weeks time Tanya got him from an F average to an overall average of a C in the class. She is focused, responsive, and pushed him to do what he needed to do to pass the class for the year! Wish I could clone her!
Tanya is very detailed, intelligent, and able to relate and connect on a student's level. My daughter was able to bring her GPA up ten points. I highly recommend this wonderful on-time tutor to anyone frantic about pre calc.
My grades have improved and I feel more confident since I have been working with Tanya. I have maintained a solid "A". Thanks!
My son said she explained math to him where it made complete sense in an easy, understandable way. He thought she was an excellent tutor and we will definitely use her again and recommend her to others!!!! Thanks Tanya for helping him make a great grade on his test!
Ms. L is great, she really challenges the student while providing a down to earth approach to explain difficult topics.
Super cordial and easygoing the entire lesson which allowed me to easily ask my questions! Had all my current problems solved and under control in just 1 lesson. Definitely recommend Tanya for any high school student struggling in physics!
Tanya helped my HS Senior tremendously in Chemistry. She was able to explain concepts in a language that he could understand.I highly recommend her tutoring services.
Tanya is a very nice person and helped me with AP Physics. She is very knowledgeable and make the subject fun. Always on time and very easy to get touch with. I will highly recommend her.
Tanya has helped me on a regular basis in Physics 1. She knows a lot about the subject and likes to explain more than I technically am required to know just to make sure that I understand why we're doing what we are doing. My physics is not calculus based, but listening to her explain the basics about how calculus affects what we're working on helps my understanding a lot. She has been patient with me even when I don't understand quickly what she is explaining to me. Some of the problems in my textbook, especially the trick questions, have taken some time and thought to work through. Once we figure out what the question is asking for, if I still don't comprehend it she guides me through it by making me think about it instead of just giving me the right answer.
We (my daughter and I) met with Tanya for the first time on 02/20/2013. The first session focused on AP European History. I felt like Tanya quickly zeroed in on the reason my daughter is doing poorly - she is not reading the book, nor taking good notes. When my daughter starting asking about the French Revolution, Tanya went into a detailed explanation of WHY the French Revolution was so important. Even I learned a thing or two! I was very impressed. I certainly hope my daughter pays attention and puts Tanya's tips and guidance to good use.
Tanya will also be tutoring my daughter on AP Statistics.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I offer tutoring in every math class from pre-algebra through differential equations. I have tutored students in mathematics ranging in ages from middle school to university. To me, simple algebra is beyond trivial. I not only have a mastery of the material, but experience in explaining it to students with a variety of learning styles.
Algebra I and II are trivial to me. I have taken and tutored a great many mathematics courses, and algebra II is one of the simpler courses that I can tutor.
While the technical subjects are my greatest strength and specialty, I can also offer tutoring in the social sciences. In high school, I took AP American History and earned a 5 on the AP exam.
Astronomy and cosmology are two of the subjects closest to my heart. Carl Sagan is my hero. Whether you need to grasp stellar nucleosynthesis or just what the hell the Big Bang is, I can help you learn about the grand nature of the cosmos.
I have studied calculus, tutored calculus, and applied it to real-world design problems. I took AP Calculus AB and BC in high school, and scored fives on both exams. At university, I took Calculus III, differential equations, and numerous upper level engineering courses that involved applying basic calculus.
Chemistry is one of my strongest subjects. I have tutored numerous students at high school, community college, and university level chemistry. Back in high school, I took AP Chemistry and scored a 5 on the AP exam. As part of my engineering education, I gained further mastery of this material and the mathematics behind it.
I have a bachelors and a masters degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M, the school that educates the majority of the civil engineers in the state of Texas. I'm a licensed EIT in the state and current work as a structural engineer.
I have an immensely broad background in and knowledge of the elementary sciences. From geology to meteorology, geology, physics, biology, chemistry, cosmology, etc. I have a grasp of the basics of most all elementary sciences.
While the technical subjects are my greatest strength and specialty, I can also offer tutoring in the social sciences. In high school, I took AP European History and earned a 5 on the AP exam.
Finite math covers an assortment of topics including solving systems of equations through matrices, linear programming and optimization, probability, and basic statistics. As part of my engineering education and background, I have a solid knowledge and experience with each of these subjects. I have tutored many students in these subjects and their applications. As such, I am well qualified to tutor any student struggling with a finite mathematics course.
Geometry comes naturally to me. I'm a classically trained civil engineer. From the balance of forces to surveying, so much of what I do in my career involves applied geometry. I have experience tutoring students in geometry and can help any student in this subject.
I am very qualified to teach mechanical engineering courses. Currently I teach full time for the UT Tyler Engineering college, teaching a mixture of civil and mechanical engineering courses. I have taught many of the courses students struggle with, including statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and thermodynamics.
I have an immensely broad background in and knowledge of the physical sciences. From geology to meteorology, geology, physics, biology, chemistry, cosmology, etc. I have a grasp of the basics of most all physical sciences.
I offer tutoring in middle school through university level physics courses. I am an engineer. My field is essentially applied physics. Whether the course involves classical Newtonian, electromagnetism, or special relativity, I have no difficulty guiding a student through these physics courses. In high school, I took AP Physics and earned a 5 on the test.
This is the first named mathematics course that most students take. I have tutored young students in math such as this and will no difficulty doing it again.
TAKS is a standardized test offered to students in Texas. I've helped numerous students with this before, just usually working with the test requirements and giving lessons on material accordingly. The material is the same as the standard high school math and other courses I tutor regularly.
This is another math course that I am very experienced with, through my education, through tutoring, and through direct professional application.
While the technical subjects are my greatest strength and specialty, I can also offer tutoring in the social sciences. In high school, I took AP World History and earned a 5 on the AP exam.
