About Kurt

I will very clearly explain to you what the math means, and then show you the nuts and bolts of how to solve a problem, from the simple to the most complex, in any area that we work on together. How can I guarantee this?

I am mathematician currently writing textbooks, one on Linear Algebra and the other on Differential Geometry, while daily conducting research into string theory and non-standard abstract algebras such as quiver mutations, bordered Floer cohomology, and Heegaard splittings via Dehn twists. But that doesn't guarantee that I can explain math to you, does it?

No. But my guarantee emerges because of my love for the English language. It made me into a serious poet and writer of sharp, clean expository prose. In other words, I can explain anything. Take calculus, for example. It is a notoriously difficult subject to explain. Yet at its core, Calculus is simply about derivatives, the limit of a difference, and integrals, the limit of a sum.

Now, visually, by drawing on a white board five different things a derivative may represent, and showing that the integral is just the inverse, or anti-derivative, operation -- I can make anyone see one fairly tidy package that they can hold tightly in their mind. And likewise, when doing problems, I will show you shortcuts that will help you to quickly work out the answer.

Optionally, because this I cannot promise, but I will endeavor to give you -- or at least tell you -- what an area of math means, not just the boring formulas you are now memorizing. It's how we mathematicians ourselves see math: always as a whole, never as chopped-up formulas. This is the big picture, what I attempt in my textbooks to reveal, the 50,000 foot view, the insight that is missing from classroom teaching.

Writing Tutoring and Vocabulary Training

I love helping students to improve their essays writing skills and to help them help themselves in quickly learning whole swaths of difficult English vocabulary for exams such as the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

I have 35 years of experience studying obscure English vocabulary for the sheer love of it, writing poetry and non-fiction, playing mean Scrabble, being a student of Latin and Greek, and being in the 1% nationally on a Brainbench Vocabulary Exam.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I am currently working on yet another textbook, this one a short 100 page textbook to help students pass calculus called "The Nuts and Bolts of Calculus"-- it focuses on the fasted way work problems with the least amount of water effort, a supershortcut guide to getting the answers.

Writing

I'm a mathematician and publisher and a professional writer. Poetry and mathematics are the two genres I focus on the most, the first, poetry, out of love, and the second, math, out of love, as well.

Here's a sample of a recent essay I wrote on the poetry of John Ashbery, to give you an actual sample of my writing that is of the same type you are writing for your sociology class:

Ashbery’s Soonest Mended: Talking Things Out and the Qualifications Therein that Lead Us to Truth

In Soonest Mended, through a humbling out of self by means of a sequence of self-referential questions and answers, through a process of bringing forth by rejecting and flipping answers and questions around, through a discourse that levels itself out by qualification as it proceeds, John Ashbery achieves a beautiful and stunning sublimation of self through the mere act of talking, thereby discovering, almost as if by accident, the nature of the poetic truth he had, apparently, been aiming for all along.

I posit that Ashbery hones a reductionist, almost mathematical, technique for approaching the truth. His speakers engage in a series of approximations to the “truth” using argumentative qualifications. It is precisely these qualifications that allow the speakers to wend their way to truth by discovering, recovering, and discarding the many “truths” — these weaker version of themselves — that argumentatively lie along the path of such self-referential discourse. This is a key technique used within almost all of Ashbery’s poetry: talk that uncovers truth by qualifying itself at every turn.
