About Johanna

The quality of my teaching is top standard. I am a fully qualified and experienced bilingual language specialist in French and English with a Master's in language teaching and twenty years' teaching experience. I am an American who grew up in France and I have taught French and English to students of all ages, from Kindergarten to adults over 60, in schools and in companies. I tailor my lessons specifically to each student's individual needs and use the appropriate teaching approach(es) to do this. The whole student - his/her learning style, professional, educational and cultural background as well as personality, interests, strengths and weaknesses, are all taken into account when I design my lessons and teach. Teaching approaches I use can include but are not limited to communicative, lexical, direct, audio lingual, grammar translation and/or kinesthetic methods. In this way, I achieve desired results in a short period of time, which explains the rate of my lessons. Braskem, Colas, BMW and Continental Automotive are some of the companies whose senior employees I have taught, and The Alliance Française, The British Council and Amideast (America-Mideast Educational and Training Services. INC.) are some of the language and cultural institutions I have worked for. I hold a Master's of Education, Advanced Placement Certificate in French, the DELTA (Diploma of English Language Teaching to Adults - Cambridge University Board) and CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults - Cambridge University Board). I have first-hand experience with the American school system as well as the British and French school systems. I have lived and worked in different countries and am therefore very familiar with cultural and language differences, their positive and enriching attributes as well as the challenges and the difficulties they can cause. I guarantee results. The quality of my teaching is top standard. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have over twenty years experience in the field and have taught in several countries including France, Spain, Indonesia and Tunisia. As an ESL teacher, opportunities to prepare international students for the TOEFL have often arisen and I have successfully prepared the candidates. I have also been a TOEFL administrator for the exam.

Writing

Teaching writing skills is an essential part of my educational and professional background as an English and French teacher. Due to demand, I am very specialized in academic writing as well as writing for business from e-mails to annual reports. In this era of technology, writing has become quite a complex skill and it is very important to recognize and know different writing styles and what type of written communication they belong to. I find writing very interesting to teach because it has so many variations that need to be understood and used.

Knowledgeable and patient.

I hired Johanna to have a better understanding of the pronounciation in French. Her lesson was exactly what I needed to improve my own speaking and listening skills.
