About Gillian

I have an MA in Criminology and a BS in Biological Anthropology with a minor in Psychology. I taught an Honors level class my senior year of college, have been a tutor since high school, and work very well with people my age, younger, and older than myself. I tutor in criminology, anthropology, psychology, sociology, writing, reading, and other K-12 subjects.

I have also worked as an editor and proofreader for several popular authors and publishing companies in non-fiction and various genres of fiction. I've also edited academic pieces, such as theses and research papers, and business publications like newsletters and brochures/pamphlets.

My goal is to help you or your child succeed. I want to help you pass that test, write that paper, or ace that class. I am a patient tutor as I understand that sometimes it's really hard to learn something and apply it efficiently. I will work at your pace and do my best to ensure you walk away with all the skills you need to continue learning in the future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

The study of the human body. I have experience in basic anatomy, osteology, and dentition.

Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of people--living and dead. I have a Bachelor of Science in Biological Anthropology and concentrated in human evolution and forensics.

College Counseling

I have experience in guiding college students in their studies. I worked as a student professor for one year in the Honors Program at the University of New Mexico. During that time I held office hours to meet with the students and guide them in the course and in college in general. I also provided my students with helpful feedback on all of their assignments and at the end of the year. I have the ability to work closely with a student to help them sort out and meet their college goals.

Criminal Justice

I am currently working towards my Master's degree in criminology. I have extensive knowledge of criminological theory and the justice system. I also have experience in applying theory to law and delinquency.

Elementary (K-6th)

Working with elementary level students involves the basics: reading, writing, math, and some science. It is important to focus on building knowledge in these basics in order to progress and move to the next grade.

Religion

Religion is the organization of beliefs of a specific group of people. My experience extends to the Catholic religion. I attended a private Catholic high school and took religion/philosophy classes every year. In college, I took a class on the New Testament and received a high marks. I am very familiar with the Bible, different philosophies and religious philosophies, and Catholic catechism.

Study Skills

In order to get homework done, pass quizzes, and pass tests, there must be a certain amount of studying done. It can be difficult to manage time for studying or to find the best way to study for something. Some people do better when they write things out while others do better when they do and re-do questions/prompts. It can be very helpful for some students to have guided help while they study. Flash cards, study guides, and practice questions are all important forms of studying.

Volleyball

I played Volleyball for 3 years in the position of setter. Since then, I have remained active in practicing and playing volleyball, unaffiliated with any team or group. I have a sincere passion for the sport and understand the basics of plays and each position.
