About Dianne

Teaching is a calling to connect with another person and help them solve their problems, whether it be in a school setting or business and sales setting.

Because Houston is an international city, I have had the joy and privilege of helping many new adult and student residents improve their English pronunciations, as well as their writing, grammar and reading comprehension skills. My international students tell me they are pleased with their progress in their speaking and writing English. In addition, I have been both a public and private school teacher for grades 5-college, and a marketing director for a large medical practice. As a marketing director, I developed patient interest articles for magazines and websites. My main field of expertise is helping the student with essay writing and literary analysis, pronunciation improvement, grammar and vocabulary building and editing and proofreading.

I will stay on task with a student and cover the material required for testing and course assignments. Sometimes what brings success to a student is having an encouraging tutor to sit right there and establish guidelines for reviewing the assignment.

We can set up goals and objectives for you on our first visit. Some of my recent tutoring has involved helping the student to write well-formatted sentences, paragraphs and reports. Other students have seen improvement in their enunciation as we practice where to place proper stress on a word.

If it's study skills, improving your reading and speaking, or helping you edit your reports and essays, I am available day or evening for you, and I look forward to hearing from you. Please note additional certifications with WyzAnt in English, Bible studies, grammar, phonics, proofreading, Sat Writing, spelling, study skills, TOEFL, and vocabulary.

Happy Learning!

Dianne W.

Se eun greatly improved her written and spoken English in the year we worked together. It's always sad to see a student move on, but she will take enhanced English communication skills with her.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I am an ordained minister of the Christian faith and my husband and I have taught Bible studies for Prison Fellowship Ministry at Ramsey and Carol Young Prisons in the Houston area.

Bible learning is one of my passions and Scripture study has brought me into a more "level" state of being.

Although I am a Christian, most of my students are not, but adherents to the Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, or other beliefs. I respect that and do not attempt to proselytize.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a BS in Education from the University of Houston in 1965. My major is in English. I have taught preschool, 5th grade and adults.

My specialty is in writing and for years I wrote news and web articles for a large medical practice.

I look forward to working with children, as well as adults, who seek to improve their English, reading and writing skills.

English

Along with a B.S. in Education, I also have a major in English. My main field of expertise is helping students with essay writing, literary analysis, pronunciation improvement, grammar, vocabulary building and editing and proofreading.

ESL/ESOL

With a BS in Education from The University of Houston in 1965, and a major in English, I can assist ESL/ESOL students in achieving a greater proficiency in reading, writing and speaking.

I taught ESL in Cairo, Egypt, at a Copt seminary, and feel that I learned as much (culturally speaking) from the students as they did from me.

With the increase of adult multi-national residents in Houston, and the importance of their gaining English proficiency, my skills and desire to inspire are a plus.

Grammar

I am certified as an English and grammar teacher, and writing is one of my specialties. I have helped students format their reports and essays, and taken a critical look at their sentence structure and grammatical correctness.

Phonics

With a BS in Education from The University of Houston in 1965, and a major in English, I have had years of training in teaching reading and phonics to children; and also, these principles apply to adults desiring to learn English grammar.

Proofreading

I have a degree in English from the University of Houston and experience writing web-based and magazine content for a large medical practice in Houston. Also I proof-read our web pages, brochure and magazine submissions written by others.

Currently, I am helping an attorney and a UH student with their reports. Both clients need help with proper grammar, punctuation and sentence flow.

I look forward to discussing how I can assist you in improving the readability of your essays and articles. Fees are negotiable for proof-reading services.

Public Speaking

Since most of my students are international professionals and college students, I have been successful helping them with pronunciation of letters and words. My expertise is in using English and grammar correctly, and knowing how to emphasize words on any subject that the speaker desires to get across to the listeners.

I have 20 years experience talking to patient groups for a large medical practice, and developed the ability to engage the listener. Lastly, I help the student to effectively group main points and details in his/her speech.

Reading

I have a B.S. in Education, and a major in English. The materials I use draw from Common Core essentials, as well as time-tested methods of improving reading comprehension.

SAT Reading

I not only have a degree in English, but I specialize in writing essays as well. I have also passed the WyzAnt SAT language and writing tests.

I must tell you, however, that I do not tutor math or science, but for many students the language and writing portions require the most attention.

SAT Writing

As an English major, I love to write and can help the SAT student to organize and proofread his/her essay paper. I am certified by WyzAnt to tutor SAT essay writing. Also, I have written several articles for local magazines and I have a good feel for what engages the reader.

I look forward to helping the student create an articulate and well-written essay for the important SAT exam.

Study Skills

As a former 5th grade teacher, I know that good study/observation habits are the basis of success in everything we do. "Paying attention" is most of the battle in acquiring knowledge. The secret to paying attention is being interested in what the teacher or book is saying. How do we do that?

For history, government and social studies, for example, we need to take notes on key facts and ideas. Review what we have written and summarize by rewriting the main points.

I have a BS in Education, and also have an English major. When I help a student with grammar, it's important to begin with what the student knows and build on increasing his/her writing and speaking skills.

I look forward to helping the student understand how to priortize assignments and do the short assignments first. Also, another useful idea is using mnemonic techniques.

Each student acquires knowledge differently, and it's important to have a tutor that is sensitive to each student's needs.

Dianne

Writing

Writing engaging essay and articles for doctors and newspapers has been my field of expertise for 40 years.

With a major in English and years writing web and magazine articles for a large company, I can help you create your own style, and together we can make sure your grammar, sentence structure and punctuation are correct and appealing.
