I have over 45 years of experience teaching English grammar and literature, Speech Communication and Public Speaking as well as Theatre Arts at the high school and university level. I have been fortunate to work with students from a broad variety of countries and cultures. I have worked with international students from the age of five up to seventy as a teacher of English as a Second Language. I have taught test preparation for both college and graduate school admissions exams, including ACT, SAT and TOEFL preparation. I have developed and taught classes that focus on the needs of academically challenged students.
I tailor my instruction to the needs of the individual student or student group. I can easily alter my approach to cater to a student's immediate objective and then shift to a comprehensive technique that addresses long-term learning goals.
Now that the school year is well under way, it is the time to schedule tutoring sessions to get a grasp on those subjects that are becoming more of a challenge than you expected with a focus on making good grades even better by building on academic strengths and working toward eliminating academic weaknesses. Juniors should be preparing for college entrance exams, either the ACT or the SAT, or both if you want to cover all bases. And, some Seniors may want to consider sharpening skills to re-take an ACT or SAT to make a higher score. My husband and I have been very pleased with the work R.L. has done with our son. R.L. is helping him develop skills necessary for success in school currently and for the future. He explained in detail what is the test about and gave me useful handouts. The practice with timer was good. I realized that the issue I had to deal with is timing.
Professor R.L tutor took the tests for the listening, reading, speaking and writing of students and gave the English level evaluation they reached, generally, it is good to what shoul do next step for the students.

I wouldn't have the acting opportunity that I have today without the help of Mr. C. He showed me what I was weak in and what I needed to work on to become a better actor. How to follow and articulate the text in the given circumstances. And at the same time, helping in my stage fright and voice work. Anybody with future endeavors in acting would be in safe hands with Mr. C. Good luck to all the future students! But then again, if your Mr. C's student, you won't need luck.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The English sections of the ACT cover a range of language skills including: Usage and Mechanics, Rhetorical Skills (the effective use of strategy, organization and style in persuasive writing), Reading Comprehension and Analysis, as well as Writing. Although one may feel comfortable using English on a daily basis, the ACT may catch even a very skilled student off guard once he or she is asked to apply these skills in a structured, timed test environment.
The Reading section of the ACT is only one of three sections that test one's English language skills. Test takers will be asked to read four passages and answer a set of questions about each passage. The reading selections may come from prose fiction, the humanities, social studies or natural science and it would be rare for a test taker to have prior experience with any of the passages. Mastering certain test taking strategies will improve one's potential for achieving a preferred score on the ACT Reading section.
I have a Master of Fine arts in Theatre Design and technology. I am an accomplished artist in a variety of media including pencil, water color, tempura, and oils. I have enjoyed art as a leisure activity and as a professional scenic and costume designer with dozens of productions in my credits. Developing grammar skills is an essential step to becoming a better writer and speaker. Everything from recognizing and using parts of speech correctly to properly structuring sentences and effectively using capitalization and punctuation will lead to you having more confidence as a writer and speaker.
The reading and sharing of literature is a favorite pastime of many people. The oldest form of literature is poetry which was used by wandering minstrels to carry news from village to village and to tell stories. That was followed by plays which were originally written in poetic form. Then, finally, came the prose form that mimics the way everyday individuals share information and tell stories. All of the genres of literature have their own unique characteristics which can be easily understood with just a little bit of effort.
I have a degree in Speech Communication and a background in teaching English pronunciation using phonics and the International Phonetic Alphabet. I have taught students as young as five as well as students from 16 to 60. I have taught English pronunciation to high school classes as well as at the college level.
One of the challenges of being a good writer is to be able to proofread and edit your own writing. I can share with you a variety of skills that will make you a better proofreader and, therefore, a better writer.

As surprising as it may seem, reading comprehension is closely tied to reading rate and the extent of one's vocabulary. Slow readers and those that struggle with the vocabulary in their reading material tend to recall less of what they read than those who can read at a higher rate with fewer stumbles due to unfamiliar vocabulary. By expanding one's daily vocabulary and improving reading speed, reading comprehension soon follows. I have more than 20 years of experience in working with students to improve their vocabulary, reading rate and reading comprehension.
For 12 years I taught SAT Verbal skills for one of the nation's top test preparation company. Prior to that I taught English and communication skills at the secondary and college level for 29 years. When it comes to the critical reading, grammar and vocabulary sections of the SAT, I have mastered them in my teaching in one way or another.

I was a competitive swimmer as a youth and was certified by the American Red Cross as a Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor. I taught swimming to children and adults for several years. In college, I was chosen to teach swimming for the Physical Education Department. I can teach you in your private pool or at a gym or club pool where you are a member. I continue to enjoy swimming several times a week for exercise and relaxation.

The Test of English as a Second Language--the TOEFL--requires you to apply English skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Also tested as part of the speaking and writing sections is one's correct use of English grammar. All of these skills can be improved with an experienced instructor.
