About Burton

I am a 2015 JD from the University of Texas and received my BA in History from Rice in 2010. I have nearly seven years of tutoring experience, four of which have been as a full-time profession. No two students are the same, and figuring out how to work with young minds to teach them how to reach their own potential drives me to get back into the tutoring business full time.

I get results because I know how to adjust to the student and to work with him or her. Half of tutoring comes in the preparation for each lesson, and I re-teach myself material for every lesson (no matter how well I know it) so as to make sure I have multiple different ways to teach it and so that I can remember what it's like to be learning it for the first time. I customize my style to the student, and thus I customize each lesson likewise.

Although in the past I have tutored high school and collegiate students, I now (and for the past 18 months) focus nearly exclusively on LSAT, bar exam (Texas, as well as MBE nationwide), and other law school-related courses. I scored a 172 on the LSAT when I took it before law school, and now consistently score in the high 170s on practice tests that I take to stay current for my tutoring business. I passed the Texas bar on the first attempt, scoring in the 97th percentile on the MBE portion.

Although I list my rate at $100/hr, my rate actually varies depending on what the subject matter is and various other factors. My hourly rate is negotiable downwards depending on (i) location, (ii) frequency of the meetings, (iii) length of the meetings, (iv) time of day, and (v) any special circumstances. LSAT starts at $105/hr; bar exam and first year law school courses are $110/hr. Anything else is available on request. Online lessons receive a $15/hr discount, although this discount is only available for students outside my tutoring radius. Beginning September 2017, I will be living in the United Kingdom, so all tutoring at that point will be exclusively online.

***CANCELLATION POLICY: (Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I've had students no-show and need to make sure this is in writing; I understand things come up, and I am flexible so long as you give me as much notice as you can and are in contact with me.) Any lesson can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead of time with no penalty. Cancellations due to illness permitted penalty-free up to two hours ahead of time. Any other reason, I will accept without penalty up to three hours before time the first time only. After that, I will bill one hour. Cancellations with less than two hours notice will be billed as a full lesson. Failure to show up to a lesson without explanation will be billed as a full lesson.***

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

Passed the Texas state bar exam first try with a score of over 800, including a 170.4 scaled score on the Multistate Bar Exam (97th percentile). Graduated top 7 percent from T14 law school. And I've been tutoring overall for 5 years.

Lifesaver!

Punctual response time, and very professional. Burton was a lifesaver! He helped to refine my Capstone paper for graduation. Revision comments were clear and easy to understand. Would highly recommend!
