Bio

I am a 2015 JD from the University of Texas and received my BA in History from Rice in 2010. I have nearly seven years of tutoring experience, four of which have been as a full-time profession. No two students are the same, and figuring out how to work with young minds to teach them how to reach their own potential drives me to get back into the tutoring business full time.

I get results because I know how to adjust to the student and to work with him or her. Half of tutoring comes in the preparation for each lesson, and I re-teach myself material for every lesson (no matter how well I know it) so as to make sure I have multiple different ways to teach it and so that I can remember what it's like to be learning it for the first time. I customize my style to the student, and thus I customize each lesson likewise.

Although in the past I have tutored high school and collegiate students, I now (and for the past 18 months) focus nearly exclusively on LSAT, bar exam (Texas, as well as MBE nationwide), and other law school-related courses. I scored a 172 on the LSAT when I took it before law school, and now consistently score in the high 170s on practice tests that I take to stay current for my tutoring business. I passed the Texas bar on the first attempt, scoring in the 97th percentile on the MBE portion.

Although I list my rate at $100/hr, my rate actually varies depending on what the subject matter is and various other factors. My hourly rate is negotiable downwards depending on (i) location, (ii) frequency of the meetings, (iii) length of the meetings, (iv) time of day, and (v) any special circumstances. LSAT starts at $105/hr; bar exam and first year law school courses are $115/hr. Anything else is available on request. Online lessons receive a $15/hr discount.

***CANCELLATION POLICY: (Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I've had students no-show and need to make sure this is in writing; I understand things come up, and I am flexible so long as you give me as much notice as you can and are in contact with me.) Any lesson can be cancelled up to 24 hours ahead of time with no penalty. Cancellations due to illness permitted penalty-free up to two hours ahead of time. Any other reason, I will accept without penalty up to three hours before time the first time only. After that, I will bill one hour. Cancellations with less than two hours notice will be billed as a full lesson. Failure to show up to a lesson without explanation will be billed as a full lesson.***

Knowledgeable tutor

Just like Burton's review says, we looked at how to approach Flaw questions. Burton gives an approach that you can bring into all Flaw questions. I've been able to use this in subsequent PTs.

Absolutely Awesome!

I am currently studying for the TX bar exam (for the second time). Burton is excellent in identifying areas of improvement and how to improve them. He has helped me develop a plan of action, making the necessary tweaks along the way. He is very prepared for each session. He is able to address every question thoroughly and has given me a newly found confidence that I will make significant improvements this go around.

Lifesaver!

Punctual response time, and very professional. Burton was a lifesaver! He helped to refine my Capstone paper for graduation. Revision comments were clear and easy to understand. Would highly recommend!

Initial consultation went smooth and as expected

Burton, B as I call him, reviewed my essays to previous bar exam questions. He spent the hour tutoring me on my weaknesses and guiding me through principals of oil and gas, which I was not taught nor had opportunity to learn from out of state.

Bang For The Buck

I found Burton to be very respectful and sensitive to our needs. He listened intently as we described our situation and was quick to develop a plan of action in order to maximize the limited available time. Burton has a very disarming and pleasant personality. My daughter felt at ease during the tutoring session which allowed her to absorb the lesson. Burton is a bright young man who knows his subject matter and knows how to share it. My daughter and I look forward to working with Burton in the future.
