I have been a private tutor for almost fifteen years. My students are often college or graduate students with English as their second language. For these students I have provided a cultural and conceptual bridge between cultures. I also have experience coaching community college students with all writing assignments, including applications for scholarships. If working on Art History papers or test preparation, I am open to museum visits for enrichment purposes as I have spent much of my life visiting the great art museums of the world in order to learn about culture, history, and aesthetics. It would be my pleasure to share my knowledge with a new group of students. I am also comfortable with literature papers and history assignments. My students have shown great improvements after working with me. In addition to traditional tutoring services I have also provided coaching for college and job interviews.
My approach to tutoring is based on the particular needs of the student. Through active listening I am able to discern and pinpoint both immediate and long-term learning objectives in order to make sessions both productive and enlightening. Over the years I have developed organizational and conceptual techniques for term paper writing that save the student precious time and reduce angst. I emphasize the practical while encouraging creativity and imagination. My students become efficient in completing their work in a timely manner and so come to enjoy their academic years.

With enthusiasm and appreciation, it is an honor to write this review for Ms. Mary Ann L. As a second language student, I was concerned about finding an English tutor that would be patient with me. I am very lucky to find Ms. Mary Ann. Her expertise in several college subjects makes her a special and well-educated person that can help just about anyone. Ms. Mary Ann is not only knowledgeable about her subject but also, her personality and wisdom in helping others is outstanding. Mary Ann is a friendly, likable, and a fun person to work with, but she is also firm with students at times. She has the ability to serve not only as a tutor, but also as a counselor, motivator, and a great person to rely on. Mary Ann, possesses great work ethics. I highly recommend Ms. L. to any one who needs to improve their research or writing skills. I am looking forward to meet with her again in the Fall.
Mary Ann, a very good teacher of the basic principles of English, taught me various ways to attack a GRE problem in a logical and efficient way.
She is very helpful and nice. She is understanding and very intelligent. She also knows how to make her students feel comfortable working with her. Many kids love her and your kids might too!
Today I finished my semester, words are not enough to thank you for your help, support and patience. I highly appreciate all your time teaching and explaining to me. Will be looking forward to work with you again with my summer semester.
Mrs. L is a professional with a lot of knowledgeable background with her expertise. When I have an assignment that needs to get done she does not waste any time. She knows exactly how to help me understand my assignments more clearly. After every session I become more appreciative and understanding about the Arts and Humanities. I highly recommend her for people that needs help in grammar, develop writing skills, and analyzing essays or the arts.
Mary Ann came at the last minute for a first time tutoring. She and My daughter immediately established a positive working rapport and successfully studied for an impending test on Mayan Civilizations and discussed an upcoming research paper. If we can sync our schedules, Mary Ann will be working with my daughter on a regular basis to help her write the research paper and successfully manage her history course.
Mary Ann is an awesome tutor! She helped be better understand what I was struggling with. When we went over World War II she gave me the confidence to help me know that as long as I took my time to present the chronological order of the war I would be set to go. She gave me helpful tips and was constantly engaged in what I had to say. I look forward to more lessons with her and hope everything works out!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had extensive academic experience in the study of architectural history from ancient to modern and contemporary periods. I have also tutored graduate level architectural students in architectural history and theory classes. These sessions required extensive reading of related materials and analysis of complex, philosophical issues related to architecture. I had the opportunity to coach one student at Rice University through an entire academic year. This consisted of three meeting per week for the required time period. I currently tutor an architectural student at least twice weekly for architectural theory and history classes.
I have had years of study in Greek and Roman Art History at the graduate and undergraduate levels. As part of my degree from Fordham University I was required to study Ancient Greek philosophy from the pre Socratics to Plato to Aristotle. I have also had exposure to Neo Platonism through Plotinus and Italian Rennaisance Art History. I was required to read Heroditus, Thucidyus, Josephus, Eusebius, and other Classical historians throughout my academic career and I have also read the Greek dramatists, Sophocles, Aristophanes, and Euripedes.
I have successfully coached many students with college essays and scholarships. This kind of work is very enjoyable for me as I can eventually experience the outcome of the work when the student is finally accepted at the college of their choice. I have coached both liberal arts majors and science majors over the past fifteen years.
I have been working with English test prep and writing students for fifteen years. Most of my students have English as their second language but many are native speakers. Most are college level. I emphasize sentence and paragraph structure as well as vocabulary in my lessons. I scored a 780 out of 800 on the GRE exam so I have experienced the test taking process myself, and been successful.
I have an undergraduate degree in Art History from Fordham University in NYC and a Masters in Art History from University of Saint Thomas in Houston. I recently completed a course in American Westerns in Film and Literature. My visual arts degrees required knowledge and analysis of classic European, American, and some Japanese films.
I have graduated from a Jesuit University that required a minimum of three theology courses. As a consequence, I have a comprehensive understanding of the progression of religious history and philosophy in the west. I have also done extensive reading and practice of world religion. I completed an informal course conducted in India which focused on Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism.
I have years of experience tutoring students in sociology and social sciences. I have assisted students in writing term papers with themes such as Criminology, Emile Durkheim and Anomie. My MPH includes Master's level courses in the sociology, economics, and anthropology of health in the US and internationally.
I have over fifteen years of experience coaching students with study skills in all disciplines. I am especially focused on organization and memory related exercises for the student. I have had great success in preparing students for exams, coaching with writing applications for scholarships, and coaching for college interviews. My background encompasses biological sciences, Anatomy and Physiology, social sciences, philosophy, and Art History.
My world history perspective is grounded in my MLA in Art History. This means that I see world history through a prism of culture and cultural artifacts as well as through chronology. I have an interest in questions about historical truth and the relativity of historical narrative and interpretation. For me, History is a never ending source of exploration of beauty, culture, and human nature.
