My name is Manning, and I am an experienced academic tutor with both children and adults. I spent time early in my career as a private tutor for adults desiring to learn Microsoft Office, Quickbooks, Quicken and other business software. I have over 6+ years experience in training and development serving in varying capacities from a training coordinator to an Oracle Software Applications Trainer. I currently serve as an academic tutor with a local elementary school working with 1st graders who are struggling with reading literacy, including ADD and ESL children.
My teaching approach is individualized and I believe I am merely a facilitator and a helper when the student is "stuck". When teaching a software application, I methodically break down the application, piece by piece until the student is able to relate the pieces together, then we together, put the application back together, metaphorically, through activities and learning exercises. I also believe in repetition and that it is vitally important to a student's learning and retention.
I am currently finishing my BA in Web Design & Interactive Media, and am comfortable tutoring in applications including Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Adobe Acrobat. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have over 700 hours of teaching experience (in water) through Lifetime Fitness as a swim instructor. I teach beginner swimmers (children and adults) intermediate to advanced swimmers, triathletes swimmers with special needs (fear issues, autism, physical/mental disabilities) in group and private lessons. I am current on my CPR/Pedi CPR, First Aid and AED.
I have two degrees from The Art Institute of Houston in Web Design and Interactive Media and more than 10 years of applied knowledge in the web and design field. I currently freelance my services and work with clients who have little computer knowledge up to experienced users. I am familiar with PHP, CSS and HTML as coding languages along with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite.
