College of William and Mary - Williamsburg, VA (Art History, Minor in French)
THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN (Master's)
With over a decade of experience tutoring English, French and History, I have helped my students overcome their educational hurdles. I teach students to study more efficiently and become more confident in their abilities. I am passionate about my work, and I pass along this enthusiasm. I treat each student individually and adapt my style to meet their needs. As a result, most of my students finish their courses with at least one letter grade higher. You will find that I spend a great amount of time preparing for each tutoring session, and I bring materials to measure a student's comprehension of the material. I am available for questions by telephone, text and email outside of our meetings.
I have worked with students from lower school through college to help them improve their vocabulary, grammar and spelling. In addition, I help students improve their writing, research and reading comprehension. I love reading, and I particularly enjoy preparing students to write essays and research papers. If a student needs help understanding a novel, play or other work of literature, I have extensive experience in this area also.
I graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia -- the 2nd oldest college in America, where Thomas Jefferson and several other US Presidents were educated. I have a passion for American History helping students in this field. When I work with students, I empathize with their struggle to memorize people, terms, dates. I try to structure each tutoring session in such a way that the student can learn the material at his or her own pace and feel free to ask questions along the way.
Having studied and worked in France, I have a feel for the way natives communicate as well as an appreciation for the difficulties one faces in learning a foreign language. Why do I tutor? I prefer working one-on-one because this method allows the student time to have his/her specific questions and/or difficulties addressed. I have also worked with students who would like to improve their language skills over the summer in order to make the following academic year more enjoyable. In addition to working with students in school, I have tutored adults who would like to freshen up their "high school French" before traveling to France. With over a decade of experience tutoring English, French and History, I have helped my students overcome their educational hurdles. I teach students to study more efficiently
Kathy helped my daughter study and work through an American history course that was very challenging, addressing both an immediate need for better study/test preparation as well as some maintenance on digesting the material on a weekly basis. Kathy is very, very knowledgeable on the subject matter and was also very familiar with the textbook we used. As time progressed, not only did my daughter's grade rise, but also her confidence in handling the course increased. Kathy is definitely interested in the student's progress. Kathy always came prepared, and also worked with my daughter on strategies for improving work/study in heavy content-based courses such as this.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Minor in American History from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. Over the years, I have continued to read about and study the fascinating history of our country. I have successfully tutored many students in American History, and I look forward to working with students in the future.
Learning Art History can be daunting, so if you need help, I am a very patient tutor. I have a Masters Degree in Art History from the University of Texas, and I have worked for museums, auctions houses and art galleries. Working one-on-one can be a terrific way to get a grasp of the basic principles of Art History and gain perspective on different periods and styles of art. Whether you are having difficulty keeping up in class or would like to ace the AP exam in Art History, I would be glad to help!
I have studied and worked in France, so I am very knowledgeable about its language and culture. For over 10 years, I have tutored Middle, High School and College students in French. I am a very patient and effective tutor of language skills. Most of my students end their school year with a letter grade higher than when they started. I look forward to discussing your student's specific needs.
In addition to working at a newspaper as a proofreader, I have 15 years of experience editing students' writing. When I was a graduate student working on my Master's degree, I edited many of my classmates' papers. I am skilled at editing papers for style, grammar and punctuation.
I have been tutoring High School and College students in Religion for several years. In addition to Theology, I have tutored World Religions and Comparative Religions.
Moreover, I am a Catholic, and I attended Parochial schools through High School, so I am particularly knowledgeable about Roman Catholicism.
Learning and how to study, take notes, prepare for tests and organize your work is very important. It is not easy, so I am happy to help in this area because I have helped my students who take tutoring from me for other subjects, and they do better in their classes as a result.
I have been tutoring World History students at academically challenging schools for five years, so I have enough experience to work with students from Wyzant. In addition, to High School students, I have worked with 7th graders taking similar courses.
Over the course of several years, I believe I have gained a respectable level of mastery of this subject. Moreover, history is one of my passions.
