I am a certified teacher in English, Reading, and Government for Grades K-12. I taught primarily in the secondary setting with elementary experience occurring during my tenure as a reading supervisor. Please note that I also served as a key person in the writing of curriculum in the field of elementary reading. For those who are ESL (English as a Second Language) I also hold an ESL certificate from the university. Have taught early reading in a daycare setting. Those students were ready for kindergarten at the completion of the course study.
One-on-one teaching with hands-on activities are the best techniques that I utilize when working with students. I even use these with adult learners who never graduated from high school and are seeking that diploma or GED equivalent.
I tutor at the student's home but am willing to make an exception based on location and time of session. Please note that I can meet students with parent/guardian at the local library or a convenient public place that is conducive to learning if that is more convenient. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am raising an ADD/ADHD child with a short attention span. I am familiar with techniques and strategies that have assisted my child in achieving success at school. By using these methods, he mastered his skills and will move on the next grade level. I believe that I can use my teaching skills and personal experiences to assist this type of student.
I hold an ESL certificate from the University of Houston. I have served as a bilingual supervisor for the Houston ISD in the area of reading and also served as an assistant to the Assistant Director of Reading. During my tenure in the school district, I helped write curriculum for ESL and helped teachers refine their teaching skills in the area of ESL.
I served as the assistant to the Assistant Director of Reading for the local school district. I assisted in the development of curriculum for the effective introduction and utilization of phonics to teach reading in the elementary level. Plus I helped train and instruct teachers in effective strategies in teaching reading to students.
Personally I taught reading at the secondary level, specifically middle school students and also served on the curriculum committee to develop strategies for at-risk students. My experience expands from hands-on as a teacher as a supervisor in reading.
