University of Houston (Chemical Engineering)
My name is Jesus. I speak fluently English and Spanish. I am a chemical engineer and a certified teacher. I worked as a high school math teacher (algebra II, statistics, geometry, pre-cal) for the 2010 and 2011, but currently I work at Dow doing process engineering.
I worked at a Houston Heights High School Charter School. I dealt with students with both behavior and learning problems. It was tough, and you need a special type of teacher to teach them. I found a way to educate them, and make math easy. That's the line they would say the most, "you make math look so easy." Now, I am going to tell you how I did it. First of all I am a struggling learner. Nothing comes easy to me, because I am always looking for all the answers. I have to understand something completely to do it. And that is what I did. I designed my lesson plans around struggling students. Every lesson had a mini lesson, or reviewer course. Every step had an explanation and they did it without calculators. I took away calculators. There was friction at the beginning, but when they started learning, they started paying attention and their behavior and learning problems seem to be there no more.
I have been with WyzAnt for the past two years. It has been a great experience. Students here are very self-motivated and it is very easy to work with them. Now that I am no longer working as a teacher my schedule is more flexible. I do required for most students to schedule a tutoring appointment a week in advance, or work with the open slots I have if they contact me a day or two before. I have tutor all types of students and different subjects. Among them are Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Physics, Chemistry, College Algebra, IPC, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Excel, Statistics, Geometry, Thermodynamics and Analytical Chemistry. It is a very rewarding job.
At Dow Chemicals I work as a process engineer. I use a lot of excel and other programs. I have a very strong foundation of math, chemistry and physics since my major depends greatly on those subjects. I have taken and passed the EIT exam. It is an exam given to engineers by the board of engineers. It covers like 15 different math and science subjects like calculus, linear algebra, statistics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, chemistry, and other science/physics base subjects. I really know my science and math.
I am very clear when I explain. I have the ability to break everything down to the simplest terms. I can easily find analogies in anything I teach. I have several strategies to teach depending on the student. I really enjoy teaching. For the most part, I engage my student in whatever I am teaching. I like setting learning goals with the aid of a lesson plan. Sometimes I reach my goals at the desire time and other I am flexible and put more time to what I teach to a student. I like to use graphs and tables to visually help the student. I use my computer too either for videos or to use Excel. Usually my lesson plans are simple. They consist of the topics we are going be reviewing and learning. I first create my lesson plan so the student covers everything he needs to cover and to make sure he knows it. I also use it to verify that the student has the proper tools and skills he needs to effectively learn a certain topic. I am not just going to sit there and teach you a certain topic and that is it. I will make sure you learn the concept so you can later apply it in whatever way your teacher wants you to apply it. I want you to learn not just to pass. My name is Jesus. My rate is negotiable. I also offer a free hour, the third hour, if you do two hours of tutoring but it must be used the same day.
Jesus was truly a blessing in disguise for me. I am in my 30’s, work full time and go to school. Jesus went out of his way to accommodate me and never gave up on me. He tutored me in Algebra and Calculus and even helped me in Economics! He is truly a diverse tutor that has a passion for seeing others learn and his passion shines through in what he teaches, especially math. Math has never been easy for me but Jesus took me back to the basics and taught me everything from scratch. He also created detailed notes tailored to my learning style, and he really took the time to understand my learning style so that he could teach me in the best way possible. Needless to say, I received an A in all of the courses that he tutored me in.
Excellent tutor. He really knows what he is teaching. With Jesus support my daughter has been getting A in geometry.
My teenage sons says they wish he were their teacher. Jesus teaches very easily, effortless. He has assisted with both Chemistry and Algebra II and knows how to connect with the kids and get the concept of the subject across. Thank You Jesus!
Jesus was able to help my son study for his algebra 1 final on such short notice. My son expressed that Jesus was very patient and explained in great detail. There were a few times when Jesus spoke fast, but slowed down so that my son could understand what was being covered. I plan to have Jesus to come again upon my son's request. I am very pleased with the results that he received on his final today! Thanks, Jesus!
Dependable, reliable, and a very patient tutor. No way I would have passed college algebra without Jesus. My average was D-F half-way the semester. I requested the tutor as my last effort before dropping the class. Somehow, thanks to Jesus, I ended up with a "B" in the class. Thank you Jesus for not giving up on me and for making what seemed like the impossible - possible!
I failed a college level math class the first time around; however, the second time I had a great tutor, Jesus A., who was dedicated to helping get through this class. I made a B in this class the second time, which would have been impossible without Jesus' patience and knowledgeable guidance. Thanks Jesus...you rock!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
