I help learners master concepts and lessons using proven methods of analyzing and simplifying complex problems. I can identify and help correct gaps in prior learning to assist learners in mastering more advanced topics. I enjoy teaching and seeing students gain knowledge and confidence. With Texas teacher certifications in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, I have taught in public secondary schools, colleges, and industries for 29 years. In this time, I have shown students practical applications for science and mathematics. I often tell humorous stories that relate to important topics such as Avogadro’s number and the Pythagorean Theorem. Along with formal teaching of science and mathematics, I have tutored several students individually in secondary math, science, computer skills, chemical operations technology, and measurement techniques in industry.
As a UIL sponsor, I helped students find ways to visualize new problems and then develop a plan for solving problems and eliminating extra information. I basically teach test-taking skills along with problem solving. I understand standardized testing and have been a professional test item writer for military and industrial tests. I use my knowledge of testing to help students study more effectively in anticipation of such tests.
I have taught in summer enrichment programs in science and served as a science fair judge on several occasions for Austin ISD. I have attended several teacher development workshops sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson Summer Physics Institute at Texas A&M, and Southwest Teachers Academy of Physics in Dallas. Each conference spawned new ideas for teaching science for better understanding by my students. I earned my BA degree in mathematics and physics from the University of Texas and my MS degree in secondary and higher education from East Texas State University in Commerce.
I have worked in industry as well as in my own electronics business, so I understand what employers are seeking in prospective employees. I use plain language in my teaching to explain technical terms and concepts. I also have taught computer applications for various professions including banking and manufacturing. I even taught my 88-year old mother-in-law to use a computer to write a book on English grammar! I am patient and encourage successful learning with all students using a leading-questions style of teaching. (Socrates did that too, so I didn't discover that style of teaching by myself!) I am retired, so I can be available during normal school times as well as after school. I covet the opportunity and privilege to work with you as your personal tutor.
Harvey has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering 175 questions submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.
Excellent tutor; patient and humorous
Mr. Harvey tutored my son in Algebra 2 for 11 lessons. He displayed an excellent graps of the subject matter, the ability to communicate and educate my 16 year old son and, with a rare blend of patience and humor, imparted the concepts and confidence my son required to successfully complete a self paced, self taught online course that was, prior to Mr. Harvey's intervention, was giving my son fits. Without Mr. Harvey's guidance, I have no doubt my son would have ultimately failed the course, but, the situation was turned around and my son passed with flying colors.David, 12 lessons with HarveyTutor responded:
This was my first online tutoring using Skype and the student was very cooperative and patient with the online system. He was quick to grasp methods of solving problems and adapted quickly to new ideas. I congratulate him on the work he did in his online course.
Knowledgeable and patient tutor
Harvey is a great tutor! Patient and kind, he is always willing to explain a concept repeatedly until you understand. He is also very adaptable when it comes to scheduling - he even met with me on a Sunday evening! I highly recommend Harvey to anyone!Caitlin, 8 lessons with Harvey

Very patient and kind
We worked on trig identities and trig functions to be prepared for my trig test the following day. There are many ways to solve trig problems and he helps me look at the problems in different perspectives for my advantage.Jessie, 36 lessons with Harvey
Prepared and helpful
Harvey was punctual, easy to talk to, and I feel that I can learn from him. You have to feel comfortable to learn. We will be meeting once a week for the rest of the summer to prepare for my college chemistry class this fall. With just one session I can already recommend him.Jeanetta, 7 lessons with Harvey
Great tutor, very patient
I was having some trouble with my Dual Credit College Trigonometry, and needed some help with getting ready for my final exam. Harvey explained everything very clearly and in a way that was very easy to understand. I would not hesitate to recommend Harvey to anyone needing Math tutoring assistance.Tyler, 7 lessons with Harvey
Very positive experience
Harvey has had two great tutoring sessions with my high school junior. He has difficulty keeping up with pre-AP teacher at school even with his tutorials offered at school. I believe Harvey's experience as a teacher and direction has been a positive experience for my son. He is more confident. My son said he felt good about his new tutor. I recommend him in all things math. Update: He made a 95 on his test!!!Emily, 24 lessons with Harvey
Strong tutor, very flexible and patient.
I would highly recommend Harvey as a tutor for high school age students. He is currently tutoring my daughter in math/science for ACT improvement and college readiness. Harvey works on the specific areas my student has trouble with. He is prepared with examples and works through various types of problems at each session - some ACT prep, some homework help, some general skills. Harvey is flexible in the materials to be covered and in scheduling. He is well-educated in the subject matter, prompt and reliable. It is a pleasure working with him.Joanne, 3 lessons with Harvey
