I have taught in various capacities for the last twenty-five years. I have taught and tutored in many different settings ranging from tutoring international doctoral candidate in English, to working with high school and college students in student ministries, to teaching second grade. I have tutored high school students in math and English and helped them get organized so that they were better able to make use of their time and their own motivation.
I believe that all students have different learning styles and different motivators. If I want a student to learn something (especially something that doesn't really interest them) then I have to find out how they learn and what motivates them. Working from there, I believe that most students can learn. I also believe that organization and time management are key for many students who find learning certain things a challenge. When I tutor a student, I start out by finding out what their supplies look like (not brand, but organization), what they like, what they want and how they learn. Then I devise a plan to help that student understand that learning what they need to learn can get them what they want in life. I help the student set goals and get organized so that they can see when they reach their goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Texas Teachers certificate that includes an EC thru 12 Special Ed certification. I have worked in classrooms for eleven years in which I have had to help students manage their ADD/ADHD including a learning lab that concentrated on teaching students management strategies for dealing with attention deficits.
