About Jeanette

Hello I'm Jeanette. I am fluent in oral and written Spanish and English. I am also an ESL instructor (English as a Second Language) certified through Proliteracy America. I am also certified as a translator through the American Translators Association. I've taught as a substitute teacher in the Leander Independent School District for Special Education Alternative Classrooms for Elementary, Middle and High School Students. I've worked at the Leander Public Library teaching ESL and conducting a bilingual story time for children. I enjoy reading non-fiction and watching CSI, and the History Channel. I have a daughter with dyslexia and have assisted her with her GED preparation which included various subject matters. I'm a good listener, and like to see my students make their best effort at whatever subject we are working on. I learn as much from my students as they learn from me. My manner of teaching is one where the student knows that I am there to emphasize accomplishments. When I see my student's face light up - I know I have done my job and you have gotten the concept of what we are learning. I'm here ready to help you in the area where you need that little boost. We will make it over that learning curve together.

I welcome being your tutor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I attended a Baptist University which required us to take 2 semesters of Bible. I held a 4.0 average in these classes. I attend a Women's Bible Study Group once a week and read my bible which is the study bible, which has explanation to passages and chapters.

I was raised in a home that had daily bible reading, and we attended bible studies on a weekly basis.

Business

My major in college was Business Administration. I have held positions of management, presentation and training, office management, human resouce, statistical reporting, as well as preparation of budgets and business plans. I've worked on State Funded grants and grant writing.

I've also worked for the Health Care industries in administration of those programs.

Career Development

Making a choice on what to "be when you grow up" is a never ending process. The economic growth along with changes in the economy forces us to look at our careers on an ongoing basis. What was once a hot career can quickly fizzle out with new technology, and changing markets. Therefore, continuing with ones knowledge, whether it be informational seminars, CEU trainings, and/or one or two on going college courses keeps one marketable. I have had to make several changes to a career that I had business administration as a foundation to build on. I am always reading marketing publications, networking, attending and becoming involved in community affairs, either by volunteering or merely attending these functions. Collecting business cards, and using facebook as a "business tool". Again, times are changing and they change very fast.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified through Proliteracy America and work with the Williamson Litearcy Council in providing ESL and ESOL classes to children and adults in a classroom setting as well as one on one.

I am fluent in oral and written Spanish and can communicate with students who have a difficult time in understanding the ESL tract. I also am certified to administer the BEST Practices exam to guage where each of my students learning potential is.

Reading

I can assists students with reading. I teach students as young as 3, using appropriate age books, site words, and picture reading.

Spanish

I have material that I have used for ESL classes for both children and adults. The ESL course studies are based about the level that the student understands. Basic testing is done to find out what level the student is at in their Spanish comprehension.

Special Needs

As a substitute teacher I have worked in the special needs classrooms, and inclusion. I also have a niece with down syndrome and assist her in learning and lessons that are sent home from school.

I have a special love in my heart for helping special needs students. I worked earlier with the mental health mental retardation centers in Plainview Texas and managed an adult group home for mentally ill adults.

Study Skills

Having gone to school and taking several online course developing good study skills is something that I had to learn. I've developed them with the years and have improved on setting time to study whatever material I need to get a good grasp on.

Study skills and learning them require discipline and patience. It's an ongoing process. Either one wants to improve on the skill or not.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary words can be taught with flash cards as well as using reading material. If reading material is used, the instructor would pick out the words that will be learned in the telling of the story.

If we are learning vocabulary that has been assigned in school, then we would use the concept that the student's teacher is using to reinforce the learning technique.
